Israel: Netanyahu signals delay in Palestine land theft plan

Source: ABC News

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that discussions with the U.S. on his plan to annex occupied West Bank territory would continue ‘in the coming days,’ indicating he would miss a July 1 target date for beginning the controversial process. Netanyahu made the comments shortly after wrapping up talks with White House envoy Avi Berkowitz and the U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman. The sides have been holding talks for several months on finalizing a map spelling out which areas of the West Bank will be annexed by Israel. … Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war. The international community considers the territory to be occupied, and for Israel’s more than 120 [squats]to be illegal.” (06/30/20)

Pollyanna Was Not a Pollyanna

Source: Reason
by Lenore Skenazy

“Pollyanna movies have been made around the globe, despite the fact that her name long ago became shorthand for gratingly grateful. What I would call the ‘At least Anne Frank got a book deal!’ outlook Pollyanna calls the ‘Glad Game,’ a technique she was taught by her missionary dad when she was desperately hoping for a doll and received instead a pair of crutches. But at least she didn’t need the crutches, so — hooray! I recently decided it was time to finally watch (and possibly learn from) Pollyanna. Steeling myself for a sap overload, I was shocked to discover the character was not a cloying goody-goody but actually sly, smart — and manipulative.” (for publication 07/20)

The “doublethink” community

Source: The Price of Liberty
by Nathan Barton

“Rational, sane, and observant people have always noted that many people are somehow able to believe in two conflicting ideas or ‘facts’ at the same time. Politically, we see examples of this all the time. For example, people that are deathly afraid of guns (hoplophobes) but still immediately call police (with guns) when they need help. Or people that are fearful of government power, yet constantly demand either ‘the government must do something about this,’ or ‘there oughta be a law!’ People can believe in the God of the Bible and still believe in macro-evolution. MOST people are able to figure out, hopefully sooner or later, that they cannot hold two contradictory beliefs at the same time — and pick one.” (06/29/20)

Yet Another Week of Trump Failing to Be an Actual Authoritarian

Source: The Atlantic
by Quinta Jurecic & Benjamin Wittes

“The president could tweet ‘LAW AND ORDER!’ all he wanted, but the protests looked neither lawless nor disorderly — and whatever disorder there was seemed to come from the police themselves. … Trump’s actions were more and more openly unconnected to what was actually happening in response to his flailing orders. He wanted to put 10,000 active-duty troops on the streets of D.C. It didn’t happen. He wanted to invoke the Insurrection Act. It didn’t happen either. In fact, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, issued a memo to all forces reminding them, ‘We in uniform … remain committed to our national values and principles embedded in the Constitution’ …. Trump wanted to bring down the hammer, but he couldn’t get his people to actually do it.... Show more...

Bringing Understand Across Party Lines: Guns and Abortion

Source: Coyote Blog
by Warren Meyer

“Theresa Bonopartis writes at the Federalist, ‘If Abortion Providers Cared About Women, They Wouldn’t Fight Abortion Safety At The Supreme Court.’ The article is about what one would expect, an abortion opponent wondering why women who support abortion would oppose reasonable health and safety regulations to protect women from dangerous medical practices while receiving an abortion. This should be super easy to explain to Conservatives (and vice versa) because there is an exactly parallel question that folks on the Left ask of Conservatives. My New England liberal mother-in-law often asks ‘why do gun advocates oppose very reasonable and incremental measures to make gun ownership safer?'” (03/03/20)

The New Right-Wing Program of Cultural Nationalism Is Un-American and Illiberal

Source: Reason
by Shikha Dalmia

“None of this is to suggest that pre-Trump America had completely risen above the us-versus-them impulse. But Trump’s campaign to depict Mexicans as ‘rapists and criminals’ and Mexico as a fundamental threat to American sovereignty is perhaps the first attempt in living memory to mount a major presidential campaign around it. It is terribly unfortunate that instead of rejecting this idea of nationalism, conservatives are straining to put a respectable intellectual foundation beneath it. It is as if they are buying the notion of the conservative German jurist and philosopher Carl Schmitt that the very core of political life requires opposition to ‘the Other’ because polities, even liberal ones, can’t maintain their cohesion on the strength of their own principles.” (03/03/20)

He confronted 25-year-old Samuel White Jr., who was inside, Bear said. With his wife already on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, the resident tried to detain White. He let the intruder know police were on their way, but White advanced in what the homeowner saw as a threatening way, Bear said. Surprising findings about your life expectancy and US health care

Source: Fox News Forum
by Sally Pipes

“Do Americans live in a health care hellscape? A report out this week would seem to indicate as much — but that first impression is deceiving. ‘U.S. life expectancy has not kept pace with that of other wealthy countries and is now decreasing,’ concluded the report, published by the medical journal JAMA. Or, as The Washington Post put it: ‘There’s something terribly wrong: Americans are dying young at alarming rates.’ ‘Medicare-for-all’ partisans have pounced on the research to declare the U.S. health care system an expensive failure, one in which we spend more than double what other developed nations devote to health care but die younger. But statistics like these conceal as much as they reveal. A more thorough analysis shows that the American health care system outperforms its counterparts in other countries, par... Show more...

UK: Uber Loses London License Again

“The ridesharing service Uber could be banned after Transport for London (TfL), the regulator responsible for the capital’s transportation system, deemed it not ‘fit and proper’ to hold a license to operate in the city. In a press release, TfL said it has ‘identified a pattern of failures by [Uber]including several breaches that placed passengers and their safety at risk.’ These include Uber’s systems allowing drivers to upload their own photos to other Uber drivers’ accounts, meaning they could pick up other passengers ‘as though they were the booked driver,’ which reportedly happened on at least 14,000 trips. … Uber now has 21 days to appeal TfL’s decision, which the company has said it will do.” (11/25/19)

UK: Corbyn defends "neutral" Brexit stance

Prime Minister Boris Johnson questioned how Mr Corbyn could be ‘indifferent’ on such a vital issue. And Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson accused him of an ‘abdication of leadership.’ But Mr Corbyn said acting as an ‘honest broker’ was a ‘sensible way forward.’ If he becomes prime minister, Mr Corbyn has promised to negotiate a new Brexit deal with the EU and put this to a public vote alongside the option of Remain. Attendant Loss of Life

Donald Trump: The accidental isolationist

The motherfucker kept building ICBMs until he had one capable of deterring an American intervention and then used the leverage to play Gorbachev. I do believe however that Trump’s violent temper tantrums did have an effect on one Korean statesman. South Korean president Moon Jae-In seemed ready and willing to mediate his country’s diplomacy through the traditional American network of do-nothing bullshit until Trump began openly contemplating a second Korean War on social media like Gossip Girl with a red button. Americans have traditionally viewed the Supreme Court as an unbiased, apolitical institution. But today, more than ever, this is an illusion. The court’s conservatives are now an openly partisan cadre. They’re political operatives, not jurists. But the other possible fate of the universe is even worse. If the expansion is fast enough, then the universe will keep expanding forever. Things will get colder and colder, which is the heat death.
