Fedora plans safer version upgrades
Ben Cotton has put forward a proposal which would make upgrading packages across versions of Fedora more secure and less likely to leave obsoleted packages on a user's system. The proposal suggests marking unmaintained packages as being obsolete so that it will not be carried across to new versions of the operating system when Fedora is upgraded. The benefits are: we do not leave unmaintained packages on a user's machine; we make sure that archaic packages do not break upgrade between two versions of Fedora.

Switching Software Center From Snap To Deb On Ubuntu 20.04 (ub!)
Do you know that on Focal Fossa today the software center is switched to Snap instead of the traditional Deb we normally used? Do you notice the difference? If you dislike Snap, you can turn back Ubuntu 20.04 free from Snaps and switch the software center into the original one we used on previous releases.

Fedora 32 Workstation review - Tux over troubled waters (dedoimedo)
All in all, I've had moderate+ amounts of fun with Fedoras 29-31. Here, none at all. Fedora 32 is less capable than its predecessor, almost on all levels. Basic functionality is simply ... less. This is not good. There are some nice things here, of course, like any distro, but they cannot offset the tidal wave of regressions and problems. Fedora 32 wasn't stable enough for me, I had to make significant modifications to make it usable, and while the responsiveness is better than before, the battery life suffers, and there are crashes in the heart of the system.

Fedora to ship on Lenovo laptops
Matthew Miller has announced that the Fedora distribution will soon begin shipping on Lenovo laptops. "Today, I'm excited to share some big news with you - Fedora Workstation will be available on Lenovo ThinkPad laptops! Yes, I know, many of us already run a Fedora operating system on a Lenovo system, but this is different. You'll soon be able to get Fedora pre-installed by selecting it as you customize your purchase. This is a pilot of Lenovo's Linux Community Series - Fedora Edition, beginning with ThinkPad P1 Gen2, ThinkPad P53, and ThinkPad X1 Gen8 laptops, possibly expanding to other models in the future." The Lenovo laptops will reportedly ship with software exclusively found in Fedora's repositories and therefore follow Fedora's strict open source policy.

Lubuntu 20.04 LTS will be supported until April 2023. Due to the extensive changes required to realize the passage to LXQt desktop environment, the Lubuntu team does not support upgrading from 18.04 or below to any greater release. Doing so will result in a broken system. If you are on 18.04 or below and would like to upgrade, please do a fresh install.

GNU/Linux Tips: Thunar's Secret Weapon!

If you use a desktop environment then there's a lot of reasons to like the Thunar file manager. Especially so, for example, if you're tired of Nautilus trying to be Windows Explorer, crashing at the worst times, like while you're transferring files over sFTP, or just generally devouring your system's memory (e.g. tracker & tracker miners run even if you use Nautilus without the Gnome DE). But I digress.

The real purpose of this post isn't to vent my frustrations with Nautilus, it is to shed some extra light on a feature of Thunar that often goes unmentioned and unnoticed - the bulk renamer. It's no secret, really, but it isn't specifically mentioned in the Edit or right-click menus, where you only find the regular 'Rename...' option. In fact, I don't see it mentioned, or even hinted at, anywhere in the app, despite the great utility this little tool possesses!

So how do we access this bulk renamer? Does it even exist, or am I just toying with you here? So many questions... Well, the Thunar develope... Show more...

Is Microsoft assimilating open-source, or is open-source assimilating Microsoft?

♲ Adam Gaskins (self@social.linuxlusers.com):
I've found Microsoft's acquisitions and activities in open-source projects rather disturbing. On one hand it makes me feel like they are somehow tainting a pure & precious resource, diluting the 'free' & 'open' part of Open-source and Free-software to the point of being meaningless. I have no doubt that this foray in to the community is driven by their corporate greed and other purely ill intent. On the other hand, they're certainly not the first corporation to get involved in the community with questionable motives (I'm looking at you Google, but you're not the only one either). They are, arguably, coming in to the community with the biggest potential to make big and fundamental changes to things - and while my gut says this is bad, my head says to think it through more before making a definitive judgement.

That said, is it possibly that in doing all of this that Microsoft will end up as t

♲ Adam Gaskins (self@social.linuxlusers.com):
Not only is the Librem 5 a fairly bad ass and fully Libre device, but it runs full-on GNU/Linux OS (not a watered down distro), and my understanding is that it’s capable of running any GNU/Linux distro built for ARM!

I hope they will offer a model with more than three gigs of ram and larger storage, for users who want to make better use of the full desktop potential! As it is though, it’s a very capable device with killer specs for a phone of it’s size and price. I’d love to see it be a huge success and inspire other companies to make hardware like this!
