GNU/Linux Tips: Thunar's Secret Weapon!

If you use a desktop environment then there's a lot of reasons to like the Thunar file manager. Especially so, for example, if you're tired of Nautilus trying to be Windows Explorer, crashing at the worst times, like while you're transferring files over sFTP, or just generally devouring your system's memory (e.g. tracker & tracker miners run even if you use Nautilus without the Gnome DE). But I digress.

The real purpose of this post isn't to vent my frustrations with Nautilus, it is to shed some extra light on a feature of Thunar that often goes unmentioned and unnoticed - the bulk renamer. It's no secret, really, but it isn't specifically mentioned in the Edit or right-click menus, where you only find the regular 'Rename...' option. In fact, I don't see it mentioned, or even hinted at, anywhere in the app, despite the great utility this little tool possesses!

So how do we access this bulk renamer? Does it even exist, or am I just toying with you here? So many questions... Well, the Thunar develope... Show more...

Is Microsoft assimilating open-source, or is open-source assimilating Microsoft?

♲ Adam Gaskins (self@social.linuxlusers.com):
I've found Microsoft's acquisitions and activities in open-source projects rather disturbing. On one hand it makes me feel like they are somehow tainting a pure & precious resource, diluting the 'free' & 'open' part of Open-source and Free-software to the point of being meaningless. I have no doubt that this foray in to the community is driven by their corporate greed and other purely ill intent. On the other hand, they're certainly not the first corporation to get involved in the community with questionable motives (I'm looking at you Google, but you're not the only one either). They are, arguably, coming in to the community with the biggest potential to make big and fundamental changes to things - and while my gut says this is bad, my head says to think it through more before making a definitive judgement.

That said, is it possibly that in doing all of this that Microsoft will end up as t

A fully Libre phone that runs full distros! ...and it’s actually slick looking!

♲ Adam Gaskins (self@social.linuxlusers.com):
Not only is the Librem 5 a fairly bad ass and fully Libre device, but it runs full-on GNU/Linux OS (not a watered down distro), and my understanding is that it’s capable of running any GNU/Linux distro built for ARM!
Librem 5 – Purism
Here it is connected to a 4K display with BT headset, mouse and keyboard:

I hope they will offer a model with more than three gigs of ram and larger storage, for users who want to make better use of the full desktop potential! As it is though, it’s a very capable device with killer specs for a phone of it’s size and price. I’d love to see it be a huge success and inspire other companies to make hardware like this!

$vrms
No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

#... Show more...

RT @throgh: Well, it's kind of more clear to me that I have to migrate my private servers to another more open base. For now I'm using an Intel NUC and I don't like this any longer being based on #Ubuntu-14.04. Time for a change to #Hyperbola. No #systemd, more flexibility. Also I think that a APU2C4 systemboard from #PC-Engines could be enough.

Being honest: I don't believe that #Ubuntu getting back to old positions and I don't need a unixoid copy of #Windows. #Time-for-Change #Free-and-Libre #GNU-Linux

Bits from the DPL (April 2018)

Dear developers…

This is the first "Bits…" from my second term as the DPL. As I mention
elsewhere I feel it is a privilege simply to be a Debian Developer let
alone to be selected as your representative — again, a profound thank
you for placing your trust in me for a second term. :)

Anyway, here's a brief outline of what I've been getting up to as your
Project leader during April 2018:

Qubes OS R3.2 operates reasonably fine on a Dell Optiplex 780 ‘minitower’ even tough if it is nowhere to be found in https://www.qubes-os.org/hcl/ the Hardware Compatibility List, but after installing Qubes OS R4.0: Unsupported Hardware was detected.
Missing features: HAP/SLAT/EPT/RVI, Interrupt remapping. I proceeded the installation, and after the first boot I got this error:
[‘/usr/bin/qvm-start’, ‘sys-firewall’] failed:
stdout: ””
stderr: “Start failed: internal error: libxenlight failed to create new domain ‘sys-net’, see /var/log/libvert/libxl/libxl-driver.log for details.
I couldn’t take a look because there wasn’t even a VM-menu, and I couldn’t acces Dom0.
Nothing worked. No internet connection, no VM’s, just an empty Qubes screen: it can be started and shutdown, that’s all. I reinstalled Qubes OS R3.2. and will upgrade it to R3.2.1 wich is supported untill march 28, 2019.
Anyone knows if this can be fixed and how? Or do I have to look for another computer?
