I have about 29 days of sick leave right now. That means I'm better off than a significant portion of the US population.
Roughly 100% of my day-to-day job responsibilities can be performed from home, so long as I have internet access. That means I could, in theory, work from home some days and extend my sick leave even further.
For me to use sick leave for more than 3 days, I have to see a doctor and that doctor has to complete specific paperwork. I have to basically prove that I'm sick and that I'm sick enough to qualify for FMLA leave. Without adequate test kits, that's difficult or impossible. And it would mean exposing myself or others to all the other sick people at the doctor's (and lab's) offices.
HR policy says I can work from home 1 day a week with prior supervisor approval. I haven't heard any rumors that they might expand this for workers like me whose job can be performed offsite with relative ease.
So the whole "self-quarantine" thing? THAT IS NOT AN OPTION. Not really. Even though I'm better positioned to do so than most US workers.
So, on behalf of literally everyone who has a paying job outside of the home: Fuck you for saying we should self-quarantine and/or reduce our time spent outside the home.
Fuck you, GOP, for not allowing universal healthcare to cover diagnostics and treatment. Fuck you, GOP, for not caring about anyone but yourself. Fuck you, GOP, for pretending this #COVID-19
isn't a real threat.
I am luckier than most, in that I have sick leave and I have options to work from home.
But even then, there are barriers that I cannot bypass.
Yet I'm a high-risk individual, twice over. I'm #diabetic
and I have a heart condition. That means I'm both more susceptible to and at higher risk of death from Coronavirus than the general population.
So yeah. Fuck the #GOP
and their love of for-profit health care. Fuck them hard with a cactus. Because they've put my life at great risk and I will never, ever, ever, be willing to forgive a single one of them for that. Ever. Not the elected officials and not the voters. Not one of them. Fuck you all.
