The Horrible #History of Thanksgiving

Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/27/opinion/thanksgiving-history.html
What is widely viewed as the first #Thanksgiving was a three-day feast to which the #Pilgrims had invited the local #Wampanoag people as a #celebration of the #harvest.About 90 came, almost twice the number of Pilgrims. This is the first myth: that the first Thanksgiving was dominated by the Pilgrim and not the #

On this day, 29 November 1830, "Captain Swing" farm workers fighting for better pay and more jobs attacked a farmer and constable in Stour Provost, Dorset. Some were arrested and taken to Shaftesbury, but local Swing sympathisers released the prisoners. Before the night was over further rioting broke out in five other towns.

Captain Swing was the fictional rebel leader in whose name workers' demand letters were sent. This is a great short history of the movement: https://libcom.org/history/captain-swing-was-here

Mural celebrating Iraq's tuk-tuk drivers who have been helping protesters in Baghdad's Tahrir square.

The drivers of the motorised rickshaws, typically seen in poorer parts of the capital, have become the unofficial heros of the protest movement.

When someone says “Free Tibet”, he wants the absolute power of lamas to be in this region again. 80 years ago, when the power of the Dalai Lama was unlimited in Tibet there were about 2,000 taxes.

Original #tomb raider: was #Tutankhamun buried in someone else's #grave?

Source: https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2019/nov/27/original-tomb-raider-tutankhamun-treasures-golden-pharaoh-saatchi
There is one #painting there – reproduced in the Saatchi exhibition – of a ritual that only one pharaoh could perform for another. It is the Opening of the Mouth: touching a mummy on the lips with an incense-burner to enable the dead to live again. This painting has been traditionally identified as the opening of Tutankhamun’s mouth by his successor Ay. But Ay was an old man, says Reeves, and

There used to be nine species of human. What happened to them?

The disappearance of these other species resembles a mass extinction. But there’s no obvious environmental catastrophe, except for the rise of Homo sapiens

Optimists have painted early hunter-gatherers as peaceful, noble savages, and have argued that our culture, not our nature, creates violence. But field studies, historical accounts, and archaeology all show that war in primitive cultures was intense, pervasive and lethal. Neolithic weapons such as clubs, spears, axes and bows, combined with guerrilla tactics like raids and ambushes, were devastatingly effective.
I'm always interested to read about human origins and archeology,... Show more...

English version:
During the Russian Revolution in 1917, the tiara was hidden with other jewels somewhere in Vladimir Palace in Petrograd, and later saved from Soviet Russia by Albert Stopford, a British art dealer and secret agent. In the years to follow, Princess Nicholas sold pieces of jewellery from her collection to support her exiled family and various charities.
Russian version:
In the summer of 1917, Albert Stopford, dressed in a woman's (!) dress, entered the Vladimir Palace. The apartment of the Grand Duchess was located on the second floor - a living room in the style of Louis XVI, an office, a boudoir, a bedchamber and four more rooms. Jewels of 244 items, including the Vladimir tiara, was in the boudoir.
The thief opened a secret door and folded the stolen items into suitcases. Thanks to English citizenship, he went through all the cordons without h

Gerardus Mercator (/dʒɪˈrɑːrdəs mɜːrˈkeɪtər/;[1][2] [3]5 March 1512 – 2 December 1594) [4]was a 16th-century geographer, cosmographer and cartographer from Flanders. He is most renowned for creating the 1569 world map based on a new projection which represented sailing courses of constant bearing (rhumb lines) as straight lines—an innovation that is still employed in nautical charts.... Some things remain

Rochester has shown a tendency to deemphasize parts of its past, tearing down or covering up some historically important things (e.g. Erie Canal/Subway). But in certain areas, it’s possible to find bits and pieces of the past in their original places. On Friday I took a walk around the East/Alexander area and found a few remnants. It was colder and windier than I had expected which is why there are so few photos in this post.

You’ll notice these are in black & white. It just seemed appropriate given the subject matter.

Valley Cadillac was originally located on East Avenue and their signs remain.

Figured iron post on Gardiner.

Remnants of a post in the back of the old VFW post (now ROC Brewing.
