On Saudi-Arabia and its allies

China is already Saudi Arabia's biggest trading partner, and across Asia this week political, religious and ideological differences proved no barrier to doing business. No leader mentioned Khashoggi.

The two countries also have "a lot of synergy," says Fulton. Xi is trying to push his Belt and Road initiative, under which huge amounts of Chinese trade will pass through the Red Sea that borders Saudi Arabia on its way to Europe. The Crown Prince wants to promote his own Vision 2030 economic plan, which would benefit from Chinese investment and technology transfer.

"When you lock up your country's billionaires in the Ritz Carlton it doesn't reassure foreign capital that their investment will be safe," he adds, referring to the detention of high profile Saudi royals at the five-star hotel in Riyadh in an alleged corruption sweep in 2017.

Saudi Arabia is not amused about the US' senate's statement on the #Khashoggi murder

"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia rejects the position expressed recently by the United States Senate, which was based upon unsubstantiated claims and allegations, and contained blatant interferences in the Kingdom's internal affairs, undermining the Kingdom's regional and international role," the Saudi ministry said in the statement, posted on Twitter Sunday evening.

I seriously don't know where to start, this is complete bullshit. Even to still say that these allegations were unsubstantiated... Weren't they shown the reports on all the evidences that could be found so far? I frankly don't want to say everything again, it's not worth the effort.

An #NYT journalist spoke to Saudis about their crownprince

One businesswoman, Naha Said Kattan, told me that she’s grateful to Prince Mohammed that she could drive herself to our interview. I told her that I was delighted for her, but that it was difficult to celebrate while the prince also imprisons women’s rights leaders and reportedly has had four flogged, tortured and sexually harassed, with one attempting suicide as a result.

Public opinion is difficult to judge in any police state in which journalists are closely watched. But my best guess is that the support here for the prince is real, with people welcoming his youthful leadership as a breath of fresh air; even in Arabic he is sometimes referred to affectionately by his English initials, M.B.S. But I refer to “M.B.S.,” following the dismemberment of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as “Mr. Bone Saw.”

#WashPost commemorates decease of columnist Jamal #Khashoggi

The ad, which a Post spokesperson said is a precursor to a larger advertising campaign planned for early 2019, features an image of the Saudi journalist with his face illuminated by a candle and reads, “A life is gone. The principles of free expression endure.”
“Many people are frustrated and feel betrayed by the Drumpf administration’s apparent effort to sweep Jamal’s killing under the rug and its failure to stand up for America’s values," Ryan wrote in the memo. "They can be assured that The Washington Post will not rest until justice is served on those who ordered Jamal’s killing, those who carried it out, and those who continue to try to cover it up.”

You can't rely on this administration, it will let you down no matter what. It only works for autocrats and rich people who pay for services .

#Senate agrees to withdraw military powers from Saudi-backed war in #Yemen

The non-binding "war powers resolution" calls upon President Drumpf to remove all American forces engaging in hostilities in Yemen, except for those combating Islamist extremists.

And as long as it is non-binding, Donnie is not going to do it, because he's an autocrat, just like his Saudi-Arabian counterpart, the crown prince MBS. The Congress will have to force him to do this, but unfortunately, we lack the blue majority in the senate.

And they were dismayed when the administration stood staunchly by the prince without censure, even though the #CIA concluded he probably ordered the killing. Senators want to see the administration shape the alliance as the senior partner, and enforce red lines.

Time Magazine honours journalists as "Guardians"

"For taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths, for the imperfect but essential quest for facts that are central to civil discourse, for speaking up and for speaking out, the Guardians" are the Person of the Year, Time editor Ed Felsenthal wrote.
Karl Vick, the author of the Time's cover story about "The Guardians," wrote that "this ought to be a time when democracy leaps forward, an informed citizenry being essential to self-government. Instead, it's in retreat."
She said it's a "tough time to be a journalist, but what strengthens all of us is that there's probably no better time to be a journalist, because this is when we live our values and we live our mission."

Regarding the last quote, one should at least be able to execute one's job on a freer society without fearing to be murdered for doing exactly this. That's why I would disagree with her.

Famous last words, part I: "I can't breathe."

And, according to the source, the transcript suggests that a series of phone calls are made. Turkish officials believe the calls were placed to senior figures in Riyadh, briefing them on progress.

Now, we need to find out what these conversations were about, and who was the caller. After having found out this, we need to find out who this person worked for and who gave him the order to murder and dismember Jamal Khashoggi. Maybe we will find some direct ties between him and Mohammed Bin Salman. The plot needs to thicken.

According to CNN's source, a voice identified in the transcript as Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, a former Saudi diplomat and intelligence official working for bin Salman, and known to Khashoggi from their time together at the Saudi Embassy in London, addresses him.

Gina Haspel to brief Congress on #Khashoggi murder

The CIA director is set to meet Republican and Democratic Senate leaders, as well as the chairmen and ranking senators on the key national security committees. The visit was confirmed by a person familiar with the plans who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private session.

Is there any possibility that we are going to hear about the latest information on his murder, for example, the knowledge that MBS has ordered his murder? It would be great, and we all would be very delighted to hear it.

Confront, or shake hands?

Three of them, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, British Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron, said publicly they had pressed Prince Mohammed for a full investigation into the murder.
U.S. President Donald Drumpf, who has defended U.S. ties with Saudi Arabia, “exchanged pleasantries” with the crown prince, the White House said. Drumpf has said it may never be known if Prince Mohammed ordered the killing or not. Sources say the CIA believes the crown prince ordered the killing.

Can you see the shocking difference between all those European leaders and Donnie? It's terrifying to know that the former ally of rightfulness and peace (I know that's a laughable predicate since the US have never been any of these, but this way, it somehow sounds better) has turned us his back and now works together with terrorists (even more than before).
