On the meeting between Chuck #Schumer, Nancy #Pelosi, Donnie, and Mike #Pence

Drumpf interacted with Schumer and Pelosi — and yes, I am playing political psychiatrist here — more like peers who he wants to have like him for the great guy he thinks he is. Maybe because he sees Pelosi and Schumer as big celebrities.

This would be surprising to me, since he has never got a good word about either one. To think that he sees them as celebrities, and not as his nemeses would be progress. Or maybe, he's just afraid of them because it depends on them and their parties to get the border wall funding in total, and not only the 1.6 bn dollars they offered him.

Time Magazine honours journalists as "Guardians"

"For taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths, for the imperfect but essential quest for facts that are central to civil discourse, for speaking up and for speaking out, the Guardians" are the Person of the Year, Time editor Ed Felsenthal wrote.
[...]
Karl Vick, the author of the Time's cover story about "The Guardians," wrote that "this ought to be a time when democracy leaps forward, an informed citizenry being essential to self-government. Instead, it's in retreat."
[...]
She said it's a "tough time to be a journalist, but what strengthens all of us is that there's probably no better time to be a journalist, because this is when we live our values and we live our mission."

Regarding the last quote, one should at least be able to execute one's job on a freer society without fearing to be murdered for doing exactly this. That's why I would disagree with her.

Paul Ryan resigns as House Speaker

For this, Ryan was feted in Washington society; the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget gave him a “Fiscy” award for budget bravery; he was a member of the Simpson-Bowles commission (which he ultimately voted against); he became Mitt Romney’s vice presidential candidate. His reputation was so towering that when John Boehner stepped down as speaker, he told Ryan, “You’ve got to do this job.”

I was among the reporters who took Ryan’s reboot seriously. “To move us to surpluses,” I wrote of his 2010 proposal, “Ryan’s budget proposes reforms that are nothing short of violent. Medicare is privatized. Seniors get a voucher to buy private insurance, and the voucher’s growth is far slower than the expected growth of health-care costs. Medicaid is also privatized. The employer tax exclusion is fully eliminated, replaced by a tax credit that grows more slowly than medical costs.”

Ryan proved himself and his party to be exactly wh... show more

#GOP snowflakes feel deprived by Google

Ohio Representative Steve Chabot complained that Google search results on GOP efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and Texas Representative Louie Gohmert insisted that Pichai is so surrounded by people “so surrounded by liberality that hates conservatism” that he’s “like a blind man who doesn’t even know what light looks like.” But the reddest of red meat came from Iowa Representative Steve King (probably best known nationally for his budding love affair with the far right and Austrian crypto-fascists), who demanded the names of Google’s engineering staff so he could do some McCarthyism on them.

Two polls concerning civility in Washington D.C. and on immigration

Two polls, which were commenced by National Public Radio (NPR), Marist Poll, and the PBS Newshour, are concerned about how civility has developed in Washington D.C. since Donald Trump has become president on the one hand, and how people view Trump's decisions and overall progress on the immigration situation, which may have been highlighted on the mgirant caravan which lastly ended up in Tijuana and the gates in which legal entrance is possible as long as your state of condition matches the US' approval.
My tip: Check the Republican approval rate on the immigration question.
