Italian lay missionary takes stand against Matteo Salvini’s hardline immigration policies

An Italian lay missionary has vowed to continue his hunger strike after successfully halting the deportation of a Ghanaian man, as he pledged to keep on campaigning against Italy’s hardline immigration policies.

Brother Biagio Conte, 56, known as the “new Saint Francis”, has been fasting for 17 days as he attempted to convince the government to reconsider its decision and save Paul Aning, 53, who for the past 10 years had worked as a volunteer at the Missione Speranza e Carità (Hope and Charity Mission) welcome centre in Palermo.

Najat Ibrahim Ismail has British wife and children and fears his life will be in danger

A man who brought his baby niece to Britain in the back of his car from a French refugee camp after she suffered serious burns is facing deportation from the UK on Tuesday.

Najat Ibrahim Ismail, 35, an Iraqi Kurd with a British wife and three young British children, was prosecuted for trafficking after he brought his niece Rwen Tahsin Ibrahim, then seven months old, and other family members to the UK in January 2016 in what he says was an attempt to save the baby’s life.

Special rapporteur for housing says plight of hundreds of migrants breaches their human rights

France must act on the “dire” living conditions of migrants and refugees sleeping rough in Calais and stop systematically evicting people from tents in violation of the right to adequate housing, the United Nation’s housing envoy has warned.

Leilani Farha, the UN’s special rapporteur for housing, highlighted the “harsh conditions” of an estimated 600-700 migrants and refugees currently homeless and sheltering in tents or makeshift camps on the northern French coast with “extremely limited access to emergency shelter”. Many have come to northern France because they hope to reach Britain.

Rescue vessel banned from entering Italy or Malta has almost no food or water left

Vital supplies are running dangerously low on a boat carrying more than 60 refugees and migrants that has been stranded in the Mediterranean for a week because neither Italy nor Malta will allow it to dock.

The boat, operated by the German NGO Sea-Eye and named Alan Kurdi after the Syrian boy who drowned in 2015, rescued 64 people from a rubber boat off Libya on 3 April.

A 15-year-old boy who stood up to far-right activists during violent protests in Rome has won plaudits across Italy.

The boy, Simone, was filmed speaking out in defence of minorities on Tuesday, when hundreds of far-right activists and residents took to the streets of Torre Maura, a Rome suburb. They were demonstrating against the temporary rehousing of 70 Roma people at a reception centre in the area.
