US-American philosopher Henry David Thoreau on civil disobedience

At first, Thoreau agreed with Emerson’s teaching that social reform begins with the individual. In 1845, he built a hut at Walden Pond on property owned by Emerson. For the next few years, Thoreau lived simply off the land, meditated, and wrote about nature.

In July 1846, the sheriff arrested and jailed Thoreau for his tax delinquency. Someone, probably a relative, anonymously paid Thoreau’s taxes after he had spent one night in jail. This incident prompted Thoreau to write his famous essay, “Civil Disobedience” (originally published in 1849 as “Resistance to Civil Government”).

Thoreau declared that if the government required people to participate in injustice by obeying “unjust laws,” then people should “break the laws” even if they ended up in prison. “Under a government which imprisons any unjustly,” he asserted, “the true place for a just man is also a prison.”

Alabama ranked fifth in environmental protection

(The article also includes a map in which you can check how many toxic wastes your state omits in favour of your decreasing wealth. Just in case you're curious to see.)
Alabama had the fifth highest volume of toxic releases into waterways in 2017 with 11.2 million pounds, and the fifth most toxic substances released into the air with 27.1 million pounds.

Just in case you thought that this high ranking was good. It isn't.

The analysis was published this month in the EPA’s Toxics Release Inventory, a massive collection of legal pollution reports filed with the agency from more than 21,000 industrial facilities across the country. The reports lay out how much of certain chemicals are emitted to the air, land and water from manufacturing operations, electric utilities, as well as facilities like hazardous materials landfills that accept certain toxic substances.

However, take away land releases, which include the heavy mining waste, and Alabama and other southeastern states be... show more

Caribbean leaders met with POTUS & FLOTUS

“I have a feeling Venezuela will come up,” Drumpf said at the onset of the discussions, adding that he looked forward to “spending a lot of time together this afternoon and discussing ways that we can be beneficial to you and you can be beneficial to us.”

_“It’s absolutely important that it’s not just talk, that there will be real investments; investments that will benefit the region and benefit your country as well,” Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness said, addressing the press at the conclusion of the two-hour meeting.__

“The message from this meeting was that the United States wants to encourage and promote a stronger relationship with the region,” Holness said. “We’re very happy with that message. We feel that it’s a message that is long in coming. … We’re satisfied that there will be instrumental action with that message.”

On Trump's current nominee for the Fed, Stephen Moore

On December 22nd Mr Moore said he thought the members of the Federal Reserve Board should be “thrown out for economic malpractice.” On March 13th he co-authored an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal accusing the Fed of acting as an obstacle to American growth.

They're talking about this particular piece.

During the Obama administration he railed at the Fed for keeping interest rates too low, and also urged it to shrink the size of its balance sheet. But then he became an advisor to the Drumpf administration’s election campaign (he recently published a book entitled, “Trumponomics” with Arthur Laffer, an economist). And suddenly he turned from monetary policy hawk to dove. It appears his instincts are informed less by sound principles of economic policy than by whatever he thinks most likely to please Mr Drumpf.

European federalism was pushed and financed by US spy chiefs

(Yet another outdated article, but this time, it's of historical relevance, and I am glad to say that this seems not to be distorted by any conspiratorial crackers who try to degrade the European Union, and direct it into any Jewish conspiracy in favour of the Great Replacement. This is something itneresting to read, and I guess that it will find a lot of agreement.

Mother to fatally shot son Antwon Rose II. still fighting for justice

Former East Pittsburgh police officer Michael Rosfeld fatally shot Rose in the back, arm and side of the face as the 17-year-old fled from an unlicensed taxi that Rosfeld had pulled over following a drive-by shooting.

The teen "was unarmed, and he did not pose a threat to the officer or to the community, and the verdict today says that is OK, that is acceptable behavior from a police," Merritt added.

Zaijuan Hester, 18, who was in the car with Rose before he was killed, pleaded guilty last week to charges related to the drive-by shooting.

Donald Trump fools his own supporters

At first, he acted like it, spending $50 million of his own money from April 2015 to June 2016. But the following month, when he was officially named the Republican nominee for president, his financing model changed. From July to November of 2016, outsiders contributed $234 million while Drumpf put up just $16 million.

The campaign put more than $800,000 into Drumpf Tower Commercial LLC, the holding company through which Drumpf owns his interest in the original Drumpf Tower on Fifth Avenue. Drumpf Tower Commercial LLC took in an additional $225,000 in rent from the Republican National Committee, which coordinated those payments with the campaign. That means that, since the inauguration, Drumpf’s reelection effort has had a hand in funneling more than $1 million into the president’s most famous property.

Real estate experts offered varying opinions on whether $3,000 a month represented an appropriate price. “That’s robbery,” said one person familiar with the New York mar... show more

Usual subject to conspiracy theories began to spread conspiracy theories

(Normally, this article is outdated, but I only now stumbled across it, and found it immediately interesting. Hence, why not share it, though? It shows us how mentally deranged the liar in chief really is, to spread conspiracy theories instead of fighting them, being what he is supposed to be, namely a beacon of safety, hope and prosperity in uncertain times.)
And his tabloid-fueled, campaign-trail instigations about the JFK assassination—he suggested the father of a political opponent, Ted Cruz, was somehow involved—are the backdrop against which the public must attempt to contextualize a presidential decision about open records.

Yet Drumpf isn’t just indifferent to truth, as any neutral party can see; and he isn’t solely set on deceiving the public, despite what many of his critics insist. Donald Drumpf isn’t even first and foremost a performer. He’s a pretender. And he has a preternatural sense for what people want him to be.

(Bona note: Both articles have been written by National Review staff and published on the same. I am aware of this, and wanted to assure that you are too. Thanks a lot.)

1. The Arts - Who Needs 'Em?

When is it safe to call a work of art great? Sometimes never. But if you are confident of your judgment, safety is not a consideration. WFB liked to quote Stravinsky, who said that it takes 50 years, after a work’s creation, to assess that work properly. I don’t know. With some of them, you know quickly (one way or the other). But Stravinsky and Buckley had a point nonetheless.

You can’t make everyone conform to your tastes. That’s what a lot of people don’t understand. I’m always quoting Homer — not the Greek poet, but Homer Simpson. When Apu was worried about impending fatherhood, Homer said, “Kids are the best. You can teach them to hate the things you hate. And they practically raise themselves, what with the Internet and all.”

US to cancel meeting when China bars Venezuelan interim leader Guaidó

Several sources familiar with the situation told Reuters that China - one of the Venezuelan government’s few remaining international allies - had proposed not inviting representatives from either the Maduro or Guaido camps to “de-politicize” the meeting.

But a senior official in President Donald Drumpf’s administration - which has backed Guaido as Venezuela’s legitimate ruler - said the United States and its regional allies would “pull quorum” from the meeting in Chengdu if Hausmann was excluded.

The United States is the IADB’s largest member country and has said that billions of dollars of financing from multilateral banks will be needed to rebuild Venezuela’s economy, which has been crippled by hyperinflation, food and medicine shortages and a collapse of the country’s power grid.

Sec. of State Mike Pompeo claims that God might've sent Trump to save the Jewish people

"As a Christian I certainly believe that's possible," Pompeo responded when asked whether Drumpf is a new Esther, who in the Bible convinced the king of Persia not to slaughter the Jewish people.

"It was remarkable — so we were down in the tunnels where we could see 3,000 years ago, and 2,000 years ago — if I have the history just right — to see the remarkable history of the faith in this place and the work that our administration's done to make sure that this democracy in the Middle East, that this Jewish state remains."

On Thursday, Drumpf said that the U.S. should recognize Israel's disputed control of the Golan Heights, which was captured from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed by Israel in 1981. Israeli politicians had long called for the U.S. to recognize those claims.

“But his WhatsApp,” the New York congresswoman tweeted, echoing the popular “But her emails” refrain that Drumpf allies used to argue Clinton’s use of a private server while secretary of state was much worse than any of Drumpf's controversies.

The chairman of the House Oversight Committee said Thursday a lawyer for Kushner told lawmakers last year that the White House adviser uses a private email account and encrypted messaging service WhatsApp for official government business, sometimes communicating with foreign contacts via those methods.

But still, this encryption is not worth anything when you really need safe transportation of information; there are devices created for such some purposes, you don't use an everyday messaging service when you're an adviser to the POTUS.

Gov. Matt Bevin (R - KY) exposed all of his nine children to chickenpox to raise immunity to it

“I don’t know why you would expose your child to something that could potentially have serious complications,” said Dr. Candice Dye, a pediatrician and associate professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “When you get the vaccine your body is given a protective dose, which allows your body to make antigens so you don’t get the full-blown experience.”

GOP's disgrace exposed by silence over Trump's contemptible comments on former AZ Sen. John S. McCain

«All I want is justice and evidence that President Trump is unfit for office», demands former FBI director James Comey

I care only that the work be done, well and completely. If it is, justice will have prevailed and core American values will have been protected at a time when so much of our national leadership has abandoned its commitment to truth and the rule of law.

I do have one hope that I should confess. I hope that Mr. Drumpf is not impeached and removed from office before the end of his term. I don’t mean that Congress shouldn’t move ahead with the process of impeachment governed by our Constitution, if Congress thinks the provable facts are there. I just hope it doesn’t. Because if Mr. Drumpf were removed from office by Congress, a significant portion of this country would see this as a coup, and it would drive those people farther from the common center of American life, more deeply fracturing our country.

Rupert Murdoch's son Lachlan to succeed his father in leadership

Decades ago he was promised the mantle at Fox, but the company he will run is not what anyone expected, and disappointments have lined his path to this moment. Not only is Lachlan more distant from the White House than his hard-charging father, he will oversee a much smaller company — parent to Fox News, Fox Sports, Fox Entertainment and Fox TV Stations.

On the other side of the political spectrum, several Fox News staffers said they fear Lachlan is less loyal to the network than his father, who has always backed the cable channel without question. The opinionated, conservative faction of the company that supports Trump is already testing his authority.

The Murdochs agreed to the Disney offer as the Justice Department was fighting AT&T’s $85.4 billion acquisition of Time Warner. Trump recognises Golan Heights as part of Israel

The Golan Heights is a strategic plateau straddling Israel and Syria and overlooking southern Lebanon. It was captured by Israel during the Middle East war of 1967 and subsequently annexed in a move never recognised by the international community.

Since 1974, the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) has monitored the ceasefire between Syria and Israel, and patrolled the demarcation line between Syrian and Israeli-controlled areas of the Golan.

The Golan has occasionally been struck by missiles and other forms of fire from Syria in recent years, with Israel retaliating against Syrian and Iranian targets.

Former CA governor Arnold Schwarzenegger unamused about Reality TV starlet-turned-POTUS' comment on John McCain

He told me that Drumpf’s swipes at McCain are both disgraceful and destructive. “He was just an unbelievable person,” Schwarzenegger said. “So an attack on him is absolutely unacceptable if he’s alive or dead—but even twice as unacceptable since he passed away a few months ago. It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever to do that. I just think it’s a shame that the president lets himself down to that kind of level. We will be lucky if everyone in Washington followed McCain’s example, because he represented courage.”

Drumpf wasn’t invited to the McCain funeral service, which some of his allies describe as a hurtful snub. “McCain’s funeral was calibrated to insult Drumpf—from not inviting him to the way the media played it up,” the former senior White House aide Steve Bannon told me before the president spoke in Ohio.

Why did Trump randomly switch to let the Mueller report happen?

Indeed, once he returned from Ohio Wednesday night, Drumpf tweeted some commentary from Fox News: "'The reason we have the Special Counsel investigation is that James Comey (a dirty cop) leaked his memos to a friend, who leaked them to the press, on purpose.' @KennedyNation Totally illegal!"

But it's hard to take his comment seriously, partly because it recalls his frequent statements that he'd love to sit down in an interview with Mueller, an offer that never appears to have been taken seriously by his lawyers.

Scrubbing the report for executive privilege claims is well within the purview of the White House counsel's office -- after all, their charge is to defend the institution of the presidency, not the individual President they serve.

On the aftermath of an underfunded judiciary system

Evans’s record against Flowers is 1–5. First, he obtained a conviction that was set aside by the state appeals courts because of misconduct designed to confuse and mislead the jury—he introduced evidence of crimes that were not before the court; implied that he had evidence that a defense witness had lied when there was no such evidence; and told the jury about “taped statements” by Flowers that didn’t exist. In the next two trials, he obtained convictions by engaging in the precise misconduct alleged in this case: intentionally using race to skew the jury against Flowers, who is African American.

If challenges by a prosecutor (or, less often, a defense lawyer) seem to follow a racial pattern, opposing counsel may allege a “prima facie” case of discrimination; if the judge agrees that there is a questionable pattern, he or she convenes a “Batson hearing,” in which the lawyer using the challenges is allowed to give a “non-racial” r... show more

SC justice Neil Gorsuch backs Native legislation, contradicting other conservative jusices

On Tuesday, Gorsuch split from his conservative colleagues, siding with the court's more liberal members in a case involving the Yakama Tribe and its right under an 1855 treaty to travel the public roads without being taxed on the goods brought to the reservation.

Either this chapter was inadvertently clipped, or Natives really weren't allowed to travel via means of public transport, e.g. busses and trains. Is this true, or didn't I just understand it correctly?

For those familiar with Gorsuch's record, his vote was not a surprise. Supreme Court legalises retard detention after served sentence

The 5-4 decision, which reverses a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, is widely viewed as a victory for the Drumpf administration and its hardline immigration policies. It, like the Obama administration, had argued that the government has the authority to pick up and detain immigrants for deportation at any time, and is not required to act only immediately after a prison or jail sentence has been served.

Writing for the court's dissenting liberal wing, Justice Stephen Breyer warned that the ruling gives the government too much power. The law is clear, he wrote, that the government cannot hold an immigrant without a bail hearing unless the individual is detained when released from criminal custody.

Native inmates won lawsuit to grow their hair long due to spiritual beliefs

The trio of long-time prisoners at the McConnell Unit sued the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in federal court, arguing that their Native American spiritual beliefs regard hair as an extension of the soul, something to be cut only when in mourning. The prison system’s rules requiring men to keep short hair or face disciplinary consequences, the inmates and their attorneys argued, were an unfair violation of religious freedom.

Even though female prisoners are allowed to have long hair, attorneys for the state claimed that letting men do the same would cost too much money to police, that prisoners would get too hot in uncooled facilities, that it would make identifying inmates harder and that it could increase the number of inmate suicides.

I don't get the last argument. Do they beleive that they could use their hair as a noose, to strangle themselves to death? Or how do they explain this argument?

(Guess that our GOP snowflakes can't stand the criticism they raise with all their mockery, their outspeaking and such. Please hand this man down some essays on what free speech is all about, because it seems to me like he didn't understand it. Anyway, let's read on.)
Fox News on Monday uploaded a copy of the complaint to its website. It was unclear whether the suit had actually been filed, since the copy did not bear a case number. Nunes’ lawyer could not be reached for comment Monday night.

Guess he was only screaming for attention. But as we all know, one must not count one's chickens before they are hatched.

“They spread this fake news and the slanderous news,” Nunes told host Sean Hannity in an interview on Fox News, accusing Twitter of “proliferating out things that they agree with, with the algorithms” he said the company has developed.

US State department obstructs press freedom, only allowing «faith-based media» to enter

According to CNN, one member of the State Department’s press corps was invited to join the call only to later be uninvited after attempting to RSVP. The journalist was reportedly told that the briefing was for "faith-based media only."

A transcript of the call will not be provided to reporters, CNN added.

"It's perfectly fine to ensure faith-based media have a seat at such a table. But it's PR malpractice to cut off access to the broader press corps. I wish I could say I expected more from this crowd," Kirby added.

On the viral meme that distorts Quran verses (in relation to Rep. Ilhan Omar (D - MN))

The interpretations of nine verses from the Quran that the meme includes were made by one of the founders of the site, who describes himself as a freelance writer, not a religious scholar. In total, he had offered 36 reinterpretations of verses from the Quran. Several of them have been repeated in online publications since then, illustrating how misinformation persists for years and spreads online.

Muhammad, the founder of Islam, was persecuted, at least in part, for his religious message and had to flee his home in Mecca for the nearby town of Medina. There, he and his followers remained in conflict with the Meccans, and those struggles are referenced in the Quran.

NYT reveals Deutsche Bank loaned more than 2 mn. dollars to Trump, despite warnings

Over the years, Drumpf used loans provided by Deutsche Bank to build skyscrapers and other high-end properties, the Times reported. For the German bank, its relationship with Drumpf was key in building its investment-banking business, the report said.

Drumpf’s relationship with Deutsche Bank has come under scrutiny in the U.S. The New York attorney general’s office and the Democratic-controlled Intelligence Committee and Financial Services Committee in Congress have been looking to the president’s financial ties with the German bank.
