On this day, 25 January 1911 Kanno Sugako, a Japanese anarchist feminist, was executed for her part in a plot to assassinate the Emperor. She remains the only woman to be executed in Japan for treason.

Radicalised at the age of 14 after being raped, she was one of Japan's first female journalists and advocates of women's rights, as well as a prolific writer of fiction and non-fiction. She was inspired by Sophia Perovskaya, who helped assassinate the Russian Tsar.

Sugako had admitted her guilt, as had her half-dozen or so co-conspirators. But 24 anarchists, who were mostly innocent, were sentenced to death, which enraged Sugako, who had accepted her own sentence.

In her prison diary she wrote: "I am convinced our sacrifice is not in vain. It will bear fruit in the future. I am confident that because I firmly believe my death will serve a valuable purpose I will be able to maintain my self-respect until the last moment on the scaffold. I will be enveloped in the marvellously comforting thought that I am sacrificing myself for the cause. I believe I will be able to die a noble death without fear or anguish."

In her final entry she wrote of her happiness upon learning that 12 of her fellow defendants were reprieved, and whose lives were spared.

That's still kinda happening today? With stuff like dat and SSB and ActivityPub. But all of that is super super niche and technical and not at all accessible to the average user (with the exception of AP as of pretty recently). And it just sucks man, web 2.0 is bullshit

On this day, 21 January 1950, George Orwell, celebrated British author and socialist who fought against the fascists in the Spanish civil war and revolution, died aged 46.

Orwell fought with the anti-Stalinist, socialist POUM militia, and was shot in the neck by the fascists, while many Western journalists and authors just hung out in Barcelona hotels.

He vividly described the atmosphere in revolutionary Barcelona in his excellent account of the conflict, Homage to Catalonia:

"The Anarchists were still in virtual control of Catalonia and the revolution was still in full swing… It was the first time that I had ever been in a town where the working class was in the saddle… Waiters and shop-walkers looked you in the face and treated you as an equal. Servile and even ceremonial forms of speech had temporarily disappeared. Nobody said 'Senor' or 'Don' or even 'Usted'; everyone called everyone else 'Comrade' and 'Thou,' and said 'Salud!' instead of 'Buenas Dias.'… Yet so far as one could judge the people were contented and hopeful. There was no unemployment, and the price of living was still extremely low… Above all, there was a belief in the revolution and the future, a feeling of having suddenly emerged into an era of equality and freedom. Human beings were trying to behave as human beings and not as cogs in the capitalist machine. In the barbers' shops were Anarchist notices (the barbers were mostly Anarchists) solemnly explaining that barbers were no longer slaves."

Apply for the Institute for Advanced Troublemaking’s 4th Annual Anarchist Summer School ! !

Hey fellow troublemakers! Applications are now open for the fourth annual Institute for Advanced Troublemaking’s (IAT) Anarchist Summer School, August 1-9, 2020, in so-called Worcester, MA. The IAT stresses an anarchism that is at once a social critique—stuff like #NoBordersNoNations — and especially a social vision—far better stuff like collective care, solidarity, and dignity, in loving, reciprocal, do-it-ourselves practice.

It’s also a magical #BraveSpace, in which we strive hard to co-cultivate community by encouraging everyone to experiment with being the person they want to be within the culture they want to create for the eight days of the summer camp. And if past year’s are any indication, it’s been discomforting in good ways, generative in beautiful ways, and remarkable for its communal inspiration. We’re still working on next summer’s workshops, but you can get a sense of the IAT via past years on our website, and we’ll be posting bios of the facilitators within the next couple weeks: advancedtroublemaking.wordpress.com

Applications are accepted in two rounds: February 1 and April 1, 2020. We’ll let you know by or before March 15 and May 15, respectively. We have limited space! Not everyone who fills out this application will be accepted as a participant. So please fill out this application with care! We prioritize people of often-marginalized identities, including but not limited to people of color, young or older adults, working-class folks, queer, trans, or gender-nonconforming people, those with dis/abilities, parents, and women, but recognize that many of these may not be visibly apparent. Overall, we are looking for participants who can commit to the whole time. The days will be full — but fun and thought-provoking — so we also want participants who are eager to dive into learning with their head, heart, and hands in a supportive, yet intensive environment.

Announcing the Austin Anarchist Bookfair on February 9th, 2020.

The Austin Anarchist Bookfair 2020 is a regional event bringing together anarchists and like minded folx from across the city, region, and the so-called nation. We look forward to fostering connections between anarchists, left libertarians, and anti-authoritarians. Also, we hope to celebrate the communities we have growing here and across the globe.

We’re looking for organizations, affinity groups, zine makers, passionate speakers, and anarchists to participate this year. If you or your group are interested in participating (it’s free!) please read the info below and respond by February 1st 2020.

The fair will be on Feb 9th 2020 from 12-7 at the Spider House Ballroom. We are reaching out to local, regional, and national organizations to offer you a free table at this year’s event. We are looking for orgs focused on anarchism, mutual aid, harm reduction, and zine publishing to table our 2020 event. we have approximately 15 tables spaces available as well as 6 speaker slots.

We are committed to creating a welcoming space for all people, including gender diverse folks, people with disabilities, parents, children, femmes, women and people of color. In order to create that space, preference will be given to orgs and speakers centred on those communities.

THE BOOKFAIR WILL PROVIDE:

• Event space
• Promotion (help from tabling orgs encouraged!)
• Options for attendees to purchase food and drink
• Water and snacks for tabling orgs
• Security
• Sound for presenters
• Love and admiration

Help with lodging and travel for out of town speakers can be arranged Speakers from marginalized communities may qualify for a stipend

Brief Summary of #Quantum Mechanics and the Observer Effect

Quantum mechanics is the science of learning about the world from what we can observe, and making deductions based on predictions for the experimental results of what theory tells us we fundamentally can not. Wikipedia defines a quantum state as that which “provides a probability distribution for the value of each observable, i.e. for the outcome of each possible measurement on the system.” Observation or measurement collapses the wave function and returns information about the system. The observer effect states that measurement effects the measured.

The Conscious State

Establishing an analogy between the quantum state and consciousness, we can call a conscious state that which provides a possibility-potentiality distribution for the non-observable values of each parameterate phenomenal, i.e. for the outcome of emergent self-organizations in their [Segmented Object Node Undefinable|existing local] or potential forms. The [Linguistic-Electromagnetism|linguistic-electromagnetic force] uses the [Unified Field of Consciousness|unity] of matter and consciousness to allow for phenomenals to self-organize over language.

The Law and Order Power Reciprocal

Observation is to probability as order and control are to the possibility and potentiality. Ordering collapses possibilities to the order that dictates them, and the likelihood that phenomenals will externally project their possibility-phenomena. Control collapses the potentiality because it must balance order (to make controls comprehensible) and the willingness of phenomenals to externally project potentiality-phenomena. For these simple reasons, the most effective form of governance is total freedom of self-order and self-control. The question is, how to get their sustainably, and in such a manner that no one gets hurt or feels like they are losing. The answer is to seek prosperity and power beyond the wildest dreams of pregrammarate humanity, practice full forgiveness for all, and rehabilitation for those that existing governments have deemed dangerous.
