Scientists Discover Stunning Flower-Like Patterns When Bacteria Combine
Pop a bacterium in a petri dish on an agar nutrient medium and it will go about its business, growing in its own special way.
Escherichia coli grows pretty slowly but steadily in clumps. Acinetobacter baylyi, on the other hand, moves fast, spreading out in all directions until it covers the entire petri dish in 24 hours.
But what happens when you put them in a petri dish mixed together? Well, something wonderful happens. They combine to spread outwards in a petalled pattern from a central deposit...

Bacteria must be 'stressed out' to divide
https://m.phys.org/news/2019-10-bacteria-stressed.html
A new study from EPFL scientists has found that #bacteria use mechanical forces to divide, along with biological factors.

Before a cell divides, there is a progressive build-up of mechanical stress in the #cell wall, right at the point where the cell will divide.

When a bacterial cell divides the two daughters must separate, a process mediated by #enzymes that dissolve the molecular connections between them. The investigators found that this essential process could be bypassed by pressing on the nascent division site using the AFM needle.

We may finally know what causes Alzheimer’s... Porphyromonas gingivalis – and how to stop it

If you bled when you brushed your teeth this morning, you might want to get that seen to. We may finally have found the long-elusive cause of Alzheimer’s disease: Porphyromonas gingivalis, the key bacteria in chronic gum disease.

That’s bad, as gum disease affects around a third of all people. But the good news is that a drug that blocks the main toxins of P. gingivalis is entering major clinical trials this year, and research published today shows it might stop and even reverse Alzheimer’s. There could even be a vaccine.

Alzheimer’s is one of the biggest mysteries in medicine. As populations have aged, dementia has skyrocketed to become the fifth biggest cause of death worldwide. Alzheimer’s constitutes some 70 per cent of these cases and yet, we don’t know what causes it.

Multiple research teams have been investigating P. gingivalis, and have so far found that it invades and inflames brain regions affected by A... Show more...

Skeptical but New Scientist is generally reputable for pop science.

Not just 3/3 brains.

"Chlorine can make pathogens undetectable"

Recently heard about the masking to pathogens by chlorine on BBC'S Farming Today program. Wanted to make sure of its validity. It's trure. Bacteria can enter a viable-but-nonculturable (VBNC) state triggered by such things as chlorine. We chlorinate our water, processed chickens, salads and probably many other items. Testing for salmonella and listeria can give false results putting huge numbers of humans in serious danger. This puts into question the whole aspect of our food security. The USDA has been doing some research (2007) but I haven't found the agency's response to the issue. (https://www.ars.usda.gov/research/publications/publication/?seqNo115=207278) As of 2014 a paper states further research is needed. So, how safe is our food? Something to think about. Perhaps the citizens of Veroland can uncover more up to date material.

My riverbottom clay project is working nicely. Unfortunately, it is dark brown and really, really smells like horseshit. I have worked hard to get all the organic matter out. So there's some kind of bacteria in there that kinda stinks. I don't know what it's living off of. I bleached it while it was in heavy solution. But it still smells. Not sure what to do. Usually the answer is to wait. The first batch is "wedging" up nicely. It really looks and acts like clay. I made some flat sample disks and they went leather hard and then bone dry very quickly. This #Tucson heat is good for something. I have no idea where I am going to fire them. #bacteria #clay #organicmaterial
