Proportions! Bigness! Cycling through La Guajira in the North of Colombia, we get close to Cerrejón, the biggest open-pit coal mine of South America. Beside the high technics and siccurity inside the mine, the exploitation, environmental and social impact is really impressive. We all need an urgent change, time is tight, each one of us can make a positive difference for a better future, if we only want to. Don't wait for others to make the first step, we must move all together, now! Simple daily actions: travel by 🚲, buy local, support organic, don't waste, reduce, reuse, recycle, plant a tree... Yes we can!

Your forests are your second largest storehouses of carbon after oceans. You take them for granted, you cut their trees, you take away it's biodiversity, with your agriculture, your unsustainability manners, your mining and from fires. 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity is found in forests, yet, they are disappearing in silent. Because of human activity. Because your confort is way too good to be changed for more ethic and sustainable ways. At least, forests and everything they contain will still be on pictures, on videos and on books, even when there will be none of it left. Yes, one day, if you don't protect them, forests will be gone. It's 2019, and 40% of the world's forests has already been lost. Maybe you can protect the 60% left. Maybe you can restore the 40%. You can, all it requires is to trade your confort for action and change, and NOW is a good time to do it.
Avoid palm oil, reduce your footprint, buy responsibly, recycle, reduce your paper use, trade books. Make a change. Change the future.

Good News From Bavaria

Those who also follow my account with German posts are probably a bit tired of the topic by now. I am delighted this is making international headlines. So many things are going wrong and justly need to be opposed. I think it's fair to celebrate whatever is going well. It was a major defeat of the Bavarian government and powerful lobby groups. The Bavarian government can now either sign proposal by the initiative to protect the bees into law or they can make their own suggestion and let voters decide which version they want. They have to do so by August.

There were more than 1.7 million Bavarians who supported the initiative by signing lists within two weeks. 18.4% of the voters. I don't think a government proposal will be going anywhere on this issue.

Living Soil

A Documentary for All of Us

Our soils support 95 percent of all food production, and by 2060, our soils will be asked to give us as much food as we have consumed in the last 500 years. They filter our water. They are one of our most cost-effective reservoirs for sequestering carbon. They are our foundation for biodiversity. And they are vibrantly alive, teeming with 10,000 pounds of biological life in every acre. Yet in the last 150 years, we’ve lost half of the basic building block that makes soil productive. The societal and environmental costs of soil loss and degradation in the United States alone are now estimated to be as high as $85 billion every single year. Like any relationship, our living soil needs our... Show more...

Space for nature

http://science.sciencemag.org/content/361/6407/1051
Most scientific estimates of the amount of space needed to safeguard biodiversity and preserve ecosystem benefits suggest that 25 to 75% of regions or major ecosystems must be protected. But estimating how much space is required to protect current levels of biodiversity and secure existing ecosystem benefits is challenging because of limited knowledge of the number of species on this planet, poor understanding of how ecosystems function or the benefits they provide, and growing threats such as climate change. Thus, spatial targets will be associated with great uncertainty. However, targets set too low could have major negative implications for future generations and all life. Any estimate must therefore err on the side of caution.

DugOut

The film follows Benjamin Sadd (a filmmaker) and James Trundle (an artist) as they travel to the Ecuadorian Amazon to build a canoe from scratch, then travel alone through the rainforest. The journey builds on their 10 year friendship in this isolated and offen challenging environment, testing their relationship as they struggle to deal with the conditions and the complexity of the issues that surround this part of the Amazon Rainforest.

Ben and James have been on several 'adventures' together, from pulling a sofa across southern England to swimming the length of a knee deep river in Dorset. Making films about their trips has become a part of the journey. They wanted to build on these journeys in their latest project but also make something about mo... Show more...

Introduction

Hi all! I'm #newhere on social.isurf.ca to give Friendi.ca a whirl as a potential destination for this Google+ refugee. I actually registered a few days ago, at about the same time as I joined Diaspora ( @Murray J Brown ), where many other refugees have gone. I've been drawn back upon favourable comments made by @Shelenn Ayres.

First Impressions:
I like the broad interoperability Friendi.ca has with both the Federation (e.g., Diaspora) and the Fediverse (e.g., Mastodon, where I also have accounts: @mjb ).

The look & feel of the Friendi.ca user interface is somewhat more familiar and intuitive (to me, anyways) tha... Show more...

Wir brauchen weniger Menschen? (Ähem… oder Menschen deren Lebensstiel einfach weniger Ressourcen verbraucht)

Wir brauchen mehr und größere Naturschutz Parks! (DEFINITIV!)

Indigenous peoples control one-quarter of world’s land surface, two-thirds of that land is ‘essentially natural’
https://news.mongabay.com/2018/07/indigenous-peoples-control-one-quarter-of-worlds-land-surface-two-thirds-of-that-land-is-essentially-natural/
While recognizing the rights of indigenous peoples to their traditional lands and waters is increasingly coming to be seen as an ethical obligation, the authors of the study say their results provide evidence that it is also essential to meeting local and global conservation goals and that more collaborative partnerships between indigenous peoples and governments would yield substantial benefits for efforts to conserve high-priority landscapes, ecosystems, and biodiversity.
