L.A. Riots of 1992 started today, 28 years ago. Looking at the city today, the only thing keeping the fuse off is the threat of COVID-19. The same racist, classist, sexist, anti-black bullshit we had back in 1992 is still here but intensified by gentrification & all it brings.#LosAngeles

The population prevalence of SARS-CoV-2antibodies in Santa Clara County implies that the infection is much more widespread than indicated by the number of confirmed cases.April 22 is just three days away, let us see if their stats were right.
We can use our prevalence estimates to approximate the infection fatality rate from COVID-19 in Santa Clara County. As of April 10, 2020, 50 people have died of COVID-19 in the County, with an average increase of 6% daily in the number of deaths. If our estimates of48,000-81,000 infections represent the cumulative total on April 1, and we project deaths to April 22 (a 3 week lag from time of infection to death22), we estimate about 100 deaths in the county. A hundred deaths out of 48,000-81,000 infections corresponds to an infection fatality rate of 0.12-0.2%.
By Robert WillmannDr. Ioannidis has said that the death/fatality rate for seasonal influenza is about 0.10 percent. Thus, if this study presents the situation realistically, the fatality rate for COVID-19 is similar to a flu season, at least in that part of California.
The text of the study is eight pages long, before the references and graphics. It has detail like a study of its type should. As in all statistical studies, there are side issues, such as how complete and representative the sample of persons is, how valid the testing method and statistics used are, etc. In this one a new testing technique was used that has not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but the article describes how the test kit was tested for the study. Even though it contains some statistical terminology, the study is worth reading–
No, I do not want to have this illness, at least not they symptomatic version of it. But still it begs the question – why do we not lock down the whole planet in a quarantine for every flu season? It seems to be shaping up as a worldwide bureaucratic clusterfuck of monumental proportions.
My own opinion is that the virus itself escaped from a laboratory. I have been reading some of the literature, and following Vincent Racaniello’s excellent videos and podcasts on virology. And I have been amazed at what molecular biologists can do for the last 20 years or so. They are so casual about juggling pieces-parts of virus particles, and watching what they do in cell cultures and experimental animals. I also think the notion that this is some sort of biological weapon is silly. It has to be the worst weapon ever. It’s like setting off a stink bomb in your own garage or basement, hoping to offend the neighbors.
By the way, I read somewhere that viruses in the Corona family are classed as BSL-2 agents, and not BSL-4 like Ebola. So they don’t need the negative-pressure lab rooms and the Tyvek space suits, or glove boxes, to work with it. Up until now, it has been OK for grad students to piddle around with the viruses in this family.
