So for many of us, defining ourselves as #ecosocialists is a way of distinguishing our socialism from such environmental blindness.about #carbon #taxes
Even more important, by calling ourselves ecosocialists we are saying that we don’t view the #environment as just one of many equally important concerns, just another stick to beat up #capitalism with.
Ecosocialists recognise the #global environmental crisis as the most important problem that #humanity faces in the 21st century.
However, the idea that #working people don’t care about the decay and #destruction of living conditions on earth, that they are only concerned about their pay cheques and other narrow economic issues, is both patronising and insulting.
But they will not, and should not, support #campaigns that blame them for the problems caused by #corporations and #governments.
#Activists who want to win the #working #class to the fight — and that should be all activists, since we can’t win otherwise — have to clearly show the concrete effects of #climate #change, identify the real causes, and propose changes that don’t penalise the #victims.
Raising the cost of living for people who are already struggling to make ends meet is no way to build a movement.
As #socialists, we would like everyone to recognise the capitalist system as the prime driver of environmental destruction, but we are still a minority in a world where pro-capitalist ideas dominate.
That includes the view that #consumer choices control the #economy, and that population growth as such causes environmental destruction. So we shouldn’t be surprised that many environmentalists share those views.#Umwelt #Klima #Politik #Ökosozialismus #Gesellschaft
Recently Will Steffen, one of the world’s leading scientific experts on the new epoch, wrote that “industrial capitalists of the wealthy countries, not ‘mankind as a whole,’ are largely responsible for the Anthropocene”. That is still a minority view, of course, but I think anyone who seriously and honestly studies the scientific evidence is bound to come to radical conclusions.
Mainstream economists have a religious faith in the ability of #markets to solve any problem, but like other religions, those views have little basis in reality.
So long as the world is dominated by a system based on giant corporations that constantly compete to maximise profits, and on nation states that compete to protect those profits, such a program is simply not going to happen.
The real #profit #system is a giant obstacle to environmental progress, and there will be no permanent solution so long as it reigns.
I’m a socialist precisely because I believe in the fight for humanity’s future, even in the darkest hours.
The American victory in the #space race meant that, after 1968, U.S. planners no longer took the #competition seriously. As a result, the mythology of the final frontier was maintained, even as the direction of #research and #development shifted away from anything that might lead to the creation of Mars bases and robot factories.#capitalism #technology #science #economy

Abdulaziz's phone was hacked using #Pegasus, a notorious piece of spyware developed by #NSO Group, a cyberwarfare company based in Herzliya, #Israel. Pegasus is among some of the most sophisticated spyware available on the market and can infiltrate both #iOS and #Android devices. It also allows an operator to read text messages, including those that are end-to-end encrypted; examine photos; and track a phone’s location. The #technology can also silently enable microphones and cameras, turning the phone into a portable surveillance #tool to overhear and observe conversations happening in the phone’s vicinity....

After much backlash on social media, Land of Lincoln Goodwill Industries in Springfield on Wednesday reversed its decision to strip the thrift store workers of their pay, with President and CEO Sharon Durbin issuing an apology to “our constituents, our clients and our faithful donors.”SOURCE : HERE msn.com/en-us/news
“Our recent decision regarding the (Vocational) Rehab program and the resulting harm it might have caused falls short of living up to our mission and we apologize for this error in judgment,” said Durbin in a written statement, citing an outpouring of comments regarding plans to no longer pay the workers.
