Fear of Terrorism - not only tor vpn but any form of encryption could become illegal in German - welcome to the 4th Orwellian Reich of mass surveillance

Mark my words: lawyers will destroy this world – their madness just hit a new high

Internet and Privacy activist Anke Domscheidt Berg says, this “roadmap” could lead to banning ANY FORM OF ENCRYPTION, not just tor onion network, which would be complete madness – just think about unencrypted logins!

Man in the middle could siffon your bank account passwords and steal your money.

After DSGVO and Article 3 / content upload filter, this it is just a new round of lawyer-madness.

it also just shows once more how much of a Washington-Puppet state the post-world-war-2 Germany has become and was allowed to be and how much in the Orwellian times we already l... show more

What comes after Economic Bluegrass? - Investment education!

“The Ministry of Education will work to incorporate securities and futures knowledge in the curriculum to increase financial literacy [among young Chinese] in an innovative way,” Mr Gao said, without elaborating.

“I’d better take a finance refresher course,” one person said on microblogging site Weibo. “Otherwise I won’t be able to help with my son’s studies.”

Critics have said including investor education in primary and middle school classes encourages students to speculate on the stock market. But Guangzhou’s education bureau has defended the course offered in some of its schools, saying the aim is to provide students with financial knowledge. SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST

a pretty big deal of time philosopher’s minds – and i am no exceptions – circle around the problem of: what is man? what is the natural nature of man?

Google started broadband experiment in Louisville, left abruptly - and left behind a mess

The damage goes deeper than the roads. In Louisville, a minor league city with major league ambitions, Google Fiber left behind disappointed consumers, unfulfilled promises of transformative economic development, and a slew of embarrassing headlines for a city that allowed the tech giant to use it as a guinea pig.

In October 2017, when Google Fiber started signing up customers in three Louisville neighborhoods, the ISP was a year removed from a “pause” that saw its CEO resign and more than 100 employees laid off. Turns out, disrupting the telecom industry is wildly expensive, full of intractable regulatory challenges, and opposed by powerful incumbent companies.

That didn’t happen. By March of 2018, just five months after Google Fiber launched its nanotrenching trial, the method began to fail. Not only was the sealant spilling out onto roads, leaving fiber lines exposed, but the shallow trenches left cables vulnerable during routi... show more

Planned obsolescence is real - my inexpensive HP laptop lasted for about 4 months of very mild home use before one of display hinges broke. No drops or other external damage, just opening and closing the lid a few times per day.

I searched on the Internet and stumbled upon official "advisory" from HP which instructs users how to open your laptop in six easy steps and implies that hinge failure means users not complying with this recommendation and thus "is considered customer induced damage, and is not covered under the warranty." Of course this isn't in the user manual.

I looked at the damaged hinge and plastic it attaches to and I am pretty sure it is designed to fail. It is just flimsy and tiny screws holding it are absolutely not looking adequate to withstand regularly applied effort required to turn the hinges. Hinges themselves seem overtightened and their arms are bent. I am pretty sure I opened the laptop "correctly" most of the time and even with ideal use th... show more

Coke Company confeeses to produce more than 3.3 million tonnes of plastic garbage

The figures – which the company has refused in the past to disclose – reveal the amount of plastic packaging Coca-Cola produced in 2017. The company did not reveal the scale of its bottle production but when its packaging footprint is translated into 500ml PET plastic bottles, it amounts to about 108bn bottles a year, more than a fifth of the world’s PET bottle output of about 500bn bottles a year.

“We applaud the companies that are publishing this data and encourage all companies that make and use plastics to disclose their plastics footprint.”

“Ambition levels must continue to rise to make real strides in addressing global plastic pollution by 2025, and moving from commitment to action is crucial.”

I write this article explaining the inconvenience of Japan exclusive titles: I'm really wanting a chance to play GUNNM: Martial Memory. The barrier, for a long time, wasn't that it was out of print (and thus no translation) but rather Playstation used to have USA and PAL versions.

Turns out game consoles are global now, so it's less of an issue.

So there ya go, I'm old enough to remember Japan only exclusives. #global #capitalism

For example, imagine if a US based company made a game series set in Japan, but because of fears about sales, they decide "Lets just not export this to Japan."

Luckily, the East seems to have a bit more sense, when it comes to "translator culture." #global #capitalism

Elizabeth Warren (D - MA) attacks the big tech companies

Warren, who released her proposal before a rally in New York’s neighborhood where Amazon abruptly canceled its so-called HQ2, called for appointing new regulators and passing legislation to “unwind tech mergers that illegally undermine competition” and prohibit companies from selling their own goods in marketplaces they operate, a clear reference to Amazon’s dominant business.

Internally, however, tech giants have long been gearing up for increasing hostilities in D.C. Facebook has been hiring an army of lobbyists and policy experts in the capital, Amazon is pouring millions into lobbying, and Google set records last year for lobbying spending that reached over $21 million.
