We all wonder how large the open and free social media "federation" --- aka the Fediverse -- really is. This post gives you an indication of places where there seems no detectable presence of servers running fediverse social media protocols.

These snapshots are a graphical representation of countries with servers (or their proxies) that my nodes has interacted with in some form. My node is an open node (with a relatively small number of users by Friendica standards), but has been running for several years.

The lightest colour represents counties without any web requests to my server last month.

Caribbean leaders met with POTUS & FLOTUS

“I have a feeling Venezuela will come up,” Drumpf said at the onset of the discussions, adding that he looked forward to “spending a lot of time together this afternoon and discussing ways that we can be beneficial to you and you can be beneficial to us.”

_“It’s absolutely important that it’s not just talk, that there will be real investments; investments that will benefit the region and benefit your country as well,” Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness said, addressing the press at the conclusion of the two-hour meeting.__

“The message from this meeting was that the United States wants to encourage and promote a stronger relationship with the region,” Holness said. “We’re very happy with that message. We feel that it’s a message that is long in coming. … We’re satisfied that there will be instrumental action with that message.”

Liberals either handle the border situation, or fascists take over

Clinton’s assessment of the European political situation is accurate. According to recent poll numbers, 63 percent of French people believe too many immigrants are living in their country. One-third of the British people who voted in 2016 to leave the European Union cited immigration as their primary reason. In Germany, 38 percent rate immigration as the most important issue facing their country. Thanks in great part to their anti-immigration messages, populist parties now govern Italy, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.

Across the developed world, very high levels of immigration have coincided with widening class divisions, the discrediting of political and economic elites, and the rise of extremist politics. And immigration pressures will only intensify in the decades ahead, for reasons obscured by media coverage of immigrants as poor and desperate.

Ortega releases political prisoners, is upset about earlier votes

At least 325 people died as the unrest dragged on, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Some 770 people were arrested and are considered by the opposition to be political prisoners.

A Foreign Ministry statement also said the government was willing to work to strengthen electoral institutions, deliver justice and grant reparations, and negotiate the suspension of international sanctions. But it stopped short of calling new elections, a critical demand of the Civic Alliance opposition movement.

Ortega's government has recently found itself facing an economic crisis and a $315 million (€280 million) deficit. Last November, the president and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, as well as other top Nicaraguan officials, were slapped with US sanctions for rights abuses.

On the (actual) crisis at the border

More than 76,000 migrants were apprehended crossing the southern border last month, the highest February in more than 10 years and the highest month of the Drumpf administration. The number of apprehensions tops any month during the 2014 border surge under President Barack Obama, which no one had a problem calling a crisis at the time.

There is no mechanism to return these migrants home, to hold them after they cross the border, or to remove them once they are in the interior. And word has gotten out. There’s a reason that the subset of migrants that we can’t stop from getting into the country is rapidly growing.

We should question why there is no such mechanism to return them. Because then, we would get to the actual crisis: The irresponsibility of the US ( country founded by immigrants) when it comes to safely returning those people. In the past, they used to simply tell them that they wouldn't get in, and to return from where they've come from. This indeed is irresponsible, regarding the s... Show more...

US plan to send Central American immigrants back to Mexico

On Friday, a U.S. official said several government agencies met this week to discuss implementing the policy in more border cities. Rights groups are simultaneously suing the U.S. government to try to close down the program, which plaintiffs says breaks the law and endangers refugees.

“I have nowhere to go and no money for me or for my children. I’m afraid of being in Mexico, the crime here is like back home,” Chavez said at the Madre Asunta shelter, where she is waiting with three of her children for an immigration hearing in San Diego on March 27.

“More people than expected are arriving, we weren’t expecting the returnees. They are going to saturate the shelters,” said Salome Lima of the Madre Asunta shelter.

These Mice Sing to One Another — Politely
Alston’s singing mice “converse,” scientists report. The finding may shed light on human language.
High in the mountains of Central America lives a little known creature called Alston’s singing mouse. This rodent, which spends its life scuttling around the floor of the cloud forest, may not seem like it has much to tell us about ourselves.
But the mouse produces remarkable songs, and researchers have discovered some profound similarities to our own conversations. This ability may be linked evolutionarily to the ancient roots of human language...

Maduro closes border to ABC islands

As it seems, Maduro keeps on isolating his country amid further tensions of food shortages, an economic crises and his hostility towards critics. Now, another step has been taken by closing down the border towards the Lesser Antilles, also known as the ABC islands, refering to the three islands Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao. No ships or planes will be able to trespass the Venezuelan border.

41 girls died by being locked inside burning house

But a review of more than two dozen case files of victims and survivors — along with interviews of family members, group home employees and public officials — reveals a pattern of physical, psychological and sexual abuse allegations at the facility stretching back for years.

“To be a girl in Guatemala is a risk, it’s been this way for generations,” said Marwin Bautista, an under secretary in the Ministry of Social Welfare who oversees the group homes. “This was a failure in the institution. And to be honest, it didn’t just happen. It was the terrible result of years of neglect and problems.”

Instead, most of the girls died as more than a dozen police officers argued over whether their supervisor, standing 10 feet away, should unlock the door with the keys hanging from her belt.

But of course the country is safe and all those who enter the country in a caravan are human smugglers, drug traffickers and murderers, or rapists. Sure... Show more...

On Haiti's street protests

Whether ordinary Haitians will heed this call remains to be seen. A detailed schedule of protests for this coming week has been widely circulating over the weekend, largely over the WhatsApp text messaging service, and the anger on the streets of the capital, Port-au-Prince, was palpable.

"The dollar is skyrocketing. There is trash everywhere. Everything is malfunctioning. My feeling is that it is the beginning of the end of the world in Haiti."

Whether that decree and the Sunday afternoon press release asking everyone to get back to normal will be enough to quell the protests and appease the Haitians who have taken to the streets will be put to the test in the week ahead.

Outsider candidate Nayib Bukele expected to have won elections

The businessman has vowed to tackle corruption and combat the criminal gangs responsible for one of the world's highest murder rates.

"We recognise the results of these elections. We are going to call the president-elect to wish him luck in facing the challenges in this country," Mr Calleja said.

Correspondents say Mr Bukele faces challenges in office including a sluggish economy and rampant poverty. He has said he aims to increase investment in education and to set up an anti-corruption commission with the support of the UN.

Underdog likely to win in El Salvador's elections appointed on Sunday

The ruling Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), needs a massive upset if the leftist party is to cling to power. Its traditional rival, the conservative Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), also lags well behind Bukele, who belongs to a smaller right-wing party called the Great Alliance for National Unity (GANA).

To win outright, he must secure more than 50 percent of the vote or face a run-off against his closest rival on March 10. About 5.3 million Salvadorans are registered to vote.

Illegal workers of Trump National Golf Club fired earlier this month

“I told them no, so … after that they say so the company cannot keep you there,” he said. “I start crying because I told them — like, I've been working for so long.”

Sedano, who crossed illegally into the United States with his family in 2003, said it was easy to find work at Drumpf’s property two years later. The club needed employees so badly, he said, that he believes managers didn’t thoroughly check the fraudulent Social Security and green cards that he and other workers provided. It is illegal for workers to present false documents.

#Mexico struggles with GTG - Grand Theft Gasoline

Security patrols had prevented any new illegal taps since late Friday in an important pipeline that brings gasoline from the Gulf coast to Mexico City, he said at his near-daily morning news conference.

More than 5,000 members of the armed forces and federal police are now focused on pipeline security. Lopez Obrador promised to continue the stepped-up security until supplies normalize but said conditions are starting to improve in some places.

Mexico State on the outskirts of the capital has the country's biggest population and highest sales volume. It lost well over half of its sales when an important pipeline was taken off line Jan. 3 and showed only a small improvement Saturday, according to Romero's data. He said Michoacan state sales had about recovered to normal levels.

She was careful to note via Twitter that it was only a "SUGGESTED" calendar to help people get gas "in a more orderly ma... Show more...

Small Guatemalan village managed to get rid of plastic on its own

Before 2016, San Pedro La Laguna was drowning in plastic pollution that was threatening the fragile ecosystem of Lake Atitlán. The dire need for change crystallized when a solid waste disposal processing plant that was expected to manage a decade of waste was halfway full within six months, mostly with single-use plastics. Rather than build a larger plant—which would’ve been an enormous financial burden on the town and further polluted the lake with debris—Mayor Mauricio Méndez decided to implement a stringent municipal law to encourage lasting, sustainable change.

At least we're making slow progress as well; but unlike them, we have an entire economy that whines all the time when we try to tell them that it can't go on like this anymore because we're messing up our entire planet with this plastic crap. They're such some snowflakes, you cannot believe it.

Residents were wary because they couldn’t afford to purchase biodegradable replacements. ... Show more...

from the article:
Willingness to defend one’s property is also required. One man told of buying an old farm and having to fight several times during his first year there. His neighbors would cut his fences and turn their stock loose in his fields. He learned that the best response was to wound the stock with birdshot in the belly, obliging the neighbors to meet the cost of veterinary care or risk losing their animal. The final showdown came when he returned after a few days away and found that someone had stabled four horses inside an old house that he was starting to renovate. He cut the wire, wounded the horses, and drove them back out. When the owner showed up and confronted him, he drew his .45 and fired several rounds into the ground between them. After that, his problems ceased.

New Mexican president to sign pact to decrease migrant flow

In one of his first acts in office, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez #Obrador has signed an agreement with his counterparts from three Central American countries to establish a development plan to stem the flow of migrants seeking asylum in the U.S.

Again, one has to say that the headline is more aggressive than the actual agreement that was signed by Mr. Obrador's respective counterparts. Therefore, we can all calm down.
