“Academics have done an excellent job in understanding and communicating climate science, but the same cannot be said in relation to reducing emissions,” said Anderson. “Here we have collectively denied the necessary scale of mitigation, running scared of calling for fundamental changes to both our energy system and the lifestyles of high-energy users. Our paper brings this failure into sharp focus.”#climatechange #climatebreakdown #politics

I will be #silent this week
Little more than a year, little more than 5000 toots about #climate and
This week news about # are coming in as every day, but that things are known as well. We knew about it more than 30 years back. If you want to be updated: click the #`s and read what is already known...
This is likely to be the most important thread on #ClimateBreakdown you've ever read.
Please share widely. https://twitter.com/mark_lynas/status/1145977972849033216

"L'union fait la force !!" Une phrase bien cliché qui a traversé les époques. Et oui, on l'utilise encore aujourd'hui. Pourquoi ?

Is it me or does this food look absolutely great?!
This systemic #foodwaste by supermarkets is completely incomprehensible.
I mean just admire this food, nature’s bounty right there!
Yet our prevailing economic model – unlimited #gdp growth – means that the colossally monumental waste of resources that’s taking place on a global scale is, believe it or not, encouraged!
Well, every single official economic transaction that takes place is contributing to a nation’s economic activity. That’s what all those absurd “+0.2% for 1st quarter” economic growth figures tell you.
It’s a perverse system!
By dumping this food out, the waste industry is paid to come pick it up & send it onto to its next destination thereby adding to that year’s overall GDP. It’s nonsense.
This probably won’t be news to many of you but this economic system is absolutely incompatible with a thriving planet.
This is why we desperately need new economic measures to monitor human progress.
We need a kind of rational GDP (or green GDP), one that factors in externalities (both the good & the bad) to ensure that waste of all kinds is to be disincentivised.
It’s an emergency really, because whether you like or not, economists are top-dogs in public policy.
Do you really think that heads of state really give a damn what ecologists & biologists tell them?
Of course not!
They care about economics, which is why I’ve become a reluctant economist. It’s only people who are aware of the ecological crises who can fix this system. Traditional economists, for the most part, are clueless about this; hence why we’re facing runaway #climatebreakdown and are on the brink of Earth’s 6th Mass Extinction event.
The public has to reclaim the economic sphere by taking a greater interest, as the public good has been hijacked by clueless ivory-tower economists.
This is why from this day forward I will be posting once a week a book I recommend for a more ecologically safe & socially just planet. On those posts, I would love YOU to comment (tbh, I love all your comments!) which books you can recommend about the theme discussed.
