First #litepub meeting was a good success 🤘

https://www.pleroma.site/notice/3134305

What is Litepub? A strictly defined subset of #Activitypub that will allow easy implementation, but be compatible also with other Activitypub implementations, where possible.

Hi everyone! I’m #newhere.
I’m here to share my thoughts and snaps while I #travel and get inspiration for #cycling #camping #trekking or #backpacking. I’m in #it / #programming and always interested in #decentralization and rad #opensource projects. I’m from #germany but consider myself an #earthling. #antifascist

That should get me started?

I've got to admit. I think #Matrix is awesome. It took me time to realize it. Now that I do, I want to support their work. Initially with a $5 Patreon monthly support plan. If you like Matrix, you should too.

Btw, if you're thinking of joining the Matrix, you might want to avoid the big matrix.org server. It's kind of slow sometimes. Check one of these instead. I hear the #Feneas server is pretty cool :P

We now track 22 projects on the website! 💪😅🎉

But, maintenance of information and code is needed, to actually provide useful information, ensure the public servers of all projects are found and to show pretty graphs. If you want to help, please get in touch, in comments or to me directly.

We want to track them all!

Interested in #federated #code hosting, read #GitHub, #GitLab, #Gitea, #Gogs and that kind of platforms, but being able to cooperate across instances on issues, pull request and so on? Think of #Diaspora or #Mastodon, but for code hosting.

The #ForgeFed (ex #GitPub) working group is working on #ActivityPub extensions to make this possible. We're currently collecting user stories from interested parties, to ensure that the extensions are fit for the majority of use cases that are likely to be needed.

You can #contribute in the wiki by adding yours, see this page. If you don't have an account, user stories are still welcome, see the information in the page.

“I Was Devastated”: Tim Berners-Lee, the Man Who Created the World Wide Web, Has Some Regrets

As public outrage grows over the #centralization of the Web, and as enlarging numbers of coders join the effort to decentralize it, he has visions of the rest of us rising up and joining him.

The #Future of #Decentralization

The future of decentralization isn’t just a better internet, it’s a better capitalism, experience of democracy and a sharing economy where prosperity is shared and wealth inequality no longer exists.

At @lightone 's request, I wrote a blurb about what it would take to protect user's private data from their node admin on a decentralized social network node. I use #Friendica as a reference (extending this Friendica GitHub issue about encrypting data at rest), but this applies to #Mastodon, #Diaspora and #Hubzilla as well.

Let me know what you think about it.

For those who didn't know, this is the talk by Eben Moglen that inspired four students in New York to launch diaspora*.

Eben was talking about a solution though where you'd hold your account in your own pocket, so to speak. It was never about pods or federation.

Incidentally, this original vision is fulfilled more accurately by now in the form of a project named Scuttlebutt.

https://www.scuttlebutt.nz/

It's an application that can also run offline, or in a mesh network without internet access. You can write posts and comments offline or in a local network, and things will sync up whenever possible.

(And no, it's not "blockchain". I use this project to show people who believe you need one to implement such a network.)

Bitcoin ranting and wondering

I wrote a very long winded Diaspora post regarding bitcoin and the blockchain. Since posting it, I've manged to gain a bit of perspective from various comments across both the federated and fediverse networks. Just a quick link here for people watching me on #friendica ... show more

Blockchains, bitcoins and money

Oh My!

I really don't feel like I get this stuff, but I feel like I should. I've done a ton of work around taking back control over my software and Internet life in general. I feel really good about perpetuating the free software movement and taking larger steps toward re-evaluating what #privacy should mean. A lot of this comes down to control (and preventing large entities from having it), which seems to boil down to #decentralization more often than not.

I still don't get #Bitcoin though.

What is needed, I think, is a concentrated effort on the part of well-trained, honest academic specialists to begin to create their own field-Wikis.

Why there is no builtin solution to view #diaspora* users profiles as they appear at the users pods?

It is worth knowing that some diaspora users profile may appear empty (or nearly empty) on certain pods because diaspora* is decentralized. That is why, sometimes it is worth looking how a user's profile appears on the user's pod to see what you may miss on your pod and to decide if you would like to share with that person (which will bring the user's public posts to your pod in the future).

Right now the "simplest" solution for this (as far as I know) is replacing your pod's url with the pod url of the user in question by hand. However, that is not that simple at all... :-(
[and I think it does not work if the user is on #Friendica, #GangGo, #Hubzilla or #Socialhome]

Since there will always be profiles that look different on different pods, I think there sh... show more

When discussing viable options for private and secure messengers here we often complained that Moxie Marlinspike is vehemently opposed to open up Signal's server source code in order to enable an alternative infrastructure, let alone a federated network.

And now, guess what happened.

Amazon threatens to suspend Signal's AWS account over censorship circumvention

Image/photo
Direct access to Signal has been censored in Egypt, Oman, Qatar, and UAE for the past 1.5 years. These countries attempt to block Signal by blocking connections to Signal servers from all ISPs. [...]
With Google Cloud and AWS out of the picture, it seems that domain fronting as a censorship circumvention technique is now largely non-viable in the countries where Signal had enabled this feature. [...]
In the meantime, the censors in these countries will have (at least temporarily) achieved their goals. Sadly, they didn’t have to do anything but wait.

Current prototype of what I call an "Unsite". While it can be used in conjunction with IPFS, it goes beyond IPFS is never leaving your own computer, except to update the application in a decentralized storage hub like IPFS.

The way to think of it is as an IPFS complement. The hub you'd download the applications would be visiting on multiple IPFS nodes, but the website you boot up would never leave your PC.

Unlike HTML, because Shoes is done in Ruby, you can still run terminal programs directly within its structure as well. #ruby #shoes #decentralization #unsite #ipfs
