Dutch Designers Just Launched an Anti-Surveillance Coat...

Certain rooms in your house have bad wifi; when driving through a tunnel, you sometimes lose your phone connection; and if your credit cards are pressed closely together, they often don't work. These are just a few examples of how our surroundings can influence the accessibility of modern technologies. While they're often annoying, there's also an unexpected upside to all this—these kind of barriers can also protect us from Big Brother's all-seeing eye. At least, that's the idea behind the coats and bags of the Dutch design initiative, KOVR.

The brand was founded by costume and performance artist March... Show more...

MIT and NASA engineers demonstrate a new kind of airplane wing

https://phys.org/news/2019-04-mit-nasa-kind-airplane-wing.html
A team of engineers has built and tested a radically new kind of airplane wing, assembled from hundreds of tiny identical pieces. The wing can change shape to control the plane's flight, and could provide a significant boost in aircraft production, flight, and maintenance efficiency, the researchers say.

The new approach to wing construction could afford greater flexibility in the design and manufacturing of future aircraft. The new wing design was tested in a NASA wind tunnel and is described today in a paper in the journal Smart Materials and Structures, co-authored by research engineer Nicholas Cramer at NASA Ames in California; MIT alumnus Kenneth Cheung SM '07 P

Designing Posters With Free Software

A few months back I was asked to design some poster for a local Free Software Foundation Event. ... Although many artists successfully use Free Software to create artworks, I repeatedly encounter many comments in discussion forums claiming that free software is not made for creative work. This post is also my effort in spreading awareness that one can do professional work with the help of F/LOSS tools.

I haven't updated pixelfed.org on purpose.

I don't feel like Image/photo is polished enough for both users and admins, we're getting closer to a stable release and features announced almost 1 year ago are finally starting to ship.

If I could go back in time I wouldn't change anything, I'm still blown away that more than a dozen people know about the project Image/photo

Pixelfed will be a year old in a few days.

I'm a high school dropout that has never taken any CS or computer classes.

Web development is just a hobby of mine, I work in the auto industry.

I'm so proud of this project, I never would have imagined that I could make something like this.

Thank you for helping me realize credentialism isn't so important as you think. ❤️ Image/photo

Dieter Rams designed products to last a lifetime — and he's horrified by how we throw things away

For more than 50 years, Rams made an indelible mark on product design, predominantly at the German electronics company Braun, with a focus on function over form and products that would last a lifetime. The effects of his influence are extraordinary — a legacy that transformed the nature of consumer products and, some would argue, defined the concept of good design.

Then it got serious, I'd really like to interview every day fediverse people and give them a platform to share their experiences.

Please share your thoughts: Cleanup friendica header structure

!Friendica Support
I would like to gather some feedback on a #design proposal to cleanup #friendica headers. If this is the wrong forum please hint me in the correct direction, but as both developers and users read the support forum I think it's a good fit.

Below find two images a) currently b) proposal.

Things to think about:

1. let's get rid of the secondary header menu: I think two header menubars are confusing, overwhelming for new users, uncommon on other social networks (for obvious reasons) and provide littele benefit on the pro side of things.
1.1 new post could move to the left column, text should be added and the button increased - it's the most important function of a social network after all, right?
1.2 sorting: currently Commented Order, Posted Order, Personal, Starred are shown... Show more...

Most Common Mistakes that Kill Your Creative Design

Sometimes, knowing what NOT to do is more crucial than simply going ahead with what to do. It makes more sense in the field of creative design, where the world is not black or white.
