Again, a big welcome to everyone who's been joining us recently!

If you've just signed up, particularly if you've come from a feature-rich service such as Facebook or Google+, you've probably noticed that some of your favorite features are missing from diaspora\*.

We'd love diaspora\* to be as feature-rich as any other social platform, and we wish that we'd been able to add more features to the software in recent years. Why haven't we?

The two main things that have held back development are:
  • The available developer resources.
diaspora* is built and maintained purely by volunteers working in their spare time. This means that there aren't the resources to build everything that's wanted, and priorities have to be made. We also need to make sure the code works properly and doesn't disrupt the user experience in other ways. Sometimes "move fast and break stuff" isn't the best policy!
  • Making sure that a feature is built

@Steve Taylor While you are correct in state the bug is not the cause of them shutting down, they are stating it is. This in soo many ways if just wrong and asinine. Google could have/should have gone about the shutting down go G+ in a better way. The fact that they use this bug as a scapegoat is a joke. So now the public, which relies on the Google search to one day just be canned is a new breach is found there.
Well.... I for one won't have it. I am moving ALL my services to a self hosted solution when/where possible. #diaspora #synology are able to resolve 98% of my needs I once relied on Google for. Search is gonna be a tuff one as Google is good at the search business, but I am still trying other options.

One of the more frustrating aspects of starting a #diaspora pod is the effort required to discover other federation assets (users, pods) and get posts and comments flowing into the newly created pod. After several months, I now seem to be getting more content in English, but often run into the following situations:
  • I receive a post, but do not receive all comments for that post. In some cases, I have observed that I don’t get any comments, even though many comments appear for that post on other pods.
* I wish there was a way to be able to reshare/retrieve a post that does not exist on my pod, so that I can comment on it. This comes up frequently because many posts were created, apparently, before my pod started.
  • I wish there was an easy way to find out who the podmins are. I have tried to follow podmins in an effort to establish connections with other pods, but it’s not always clear who they are.

With all of these discussions of scalability on the G+ dominated servers, would it make sense for us to try a scaled infrastructure somewhere to confirm that it works or is there a pod doing this already? I'm thinking specifically something like:
- Load balancer in front of multiple Diaspora servers
- Static content served by an S3 (or comparable) object storage system
- DB layer with multiple nodes rather than a single node

Has anyone tried this or run something like that in production? Is that an overly ambitious thing to try to setup? As I work on the API Spec I was thinking that could be something where we could build that out and then use test servers to fill it up with a substantial amount of activity. Good evening and thank you for this lovely post. It's always nice to feel #welcome as a new kid on the block from "another school", aka #google.
It's a pleasure to be #newhere and to call #pluspora #diaspora my new home ✌🏻🌹

#ThanksGoogle

I remember when #Diaspora was in alpha, and I finally got my invite. I spent a lot of time there, basically ignoring all other platforms for numerous reason, but primarily because I loved the idea of a decentralized social network. Privacy issues were huge for me as well, and so Diaspora just seemed like the perfect solution.

Over the next few years, the population seemed to dwindle a bit, and I decided to take a small break from it. That “small break” turned into several years, with me personally returning occasionally to see how things were going. It still looked a bit bleak.

Now, I’m sure there may be a few people that don’t *like* the influx of #gplusrefugees, and likely they are **very** few. But I, for one, and thrilled to have new users join the #federation. I joined #Friendica just to be able to see users from every platform interact with one another, and it’s been great seeing so many new people and new posts.

In summary, #ThanksGoogle for being terrible. You’ve brought some cool people into the neighborhood.

Hey there social media hosting people and developers working on any of the #Fediverse systems!

Is there anyone of you at the Chaos Communication Congress in Leipzig this year right after Christmas? Is there anyone interested to have a meeting there?

Just some exchange, we would need some people to moderate the event, but basically some meetup to exchange information and get to know other players in the field.
"Someone" could then register a "talk" or "meetup" for the upcoming congress, I'd say a duration of about 1.5 to 2 hours and maybe 60+ people can be expected, assuming there is many #webmasters or #developers among the visitors at the #35C3.

Any #devs and #webmaster of the following systems, or any that I might have missed that are using #ActivityPup and can communicate with the others, please comment here if you like the idea!

We Are Here (repost)

This is a follow-up to my earlier post You Are Here

In thinking through the #dandelion metaphor, as well as the comments I received on the earlier post, I started to think in a different direction.

A few commenters wanted a more inclusive message. Specifically, those commenters complained that I had placed the “You Are Here” label all the way to the edge of the diagram, rather than in the “center.” I explained that there is no “center” in a distributed network like diaspora*. But, that got me thinking about the center, and a poem by W.B. Yeats. So, I had an idea about how to tie it all in together in an inclusive way, while expanding on the dandelion mythos: We Are Here. That’s what I came up with.

So, I created a video and uploaded it onto the #... show more

finally i found a few things that i #dontlike with #diaspora. none of them critical since they are easy to avoid, and as far as i can see it's not abuse of the platform, so nothing needs to be done.
  • there's a lot of news feeds in the public stream and i don't see the point. wouldn't it be enough to share the feed URL? if i want to read that feed i don't need diaspora for that. but it's just a few additional PageDown keys when scrolling thru the public stream, so what?
  • quite a few users do nothing but re-share articles from said news feeds and other users with no posts of their own. but that's ok, i don't have to include them in my aspects.
others mentioned they found this (diaspora) a heaven for alt-right or nazi trolls, but so far i didn't see any of that. once i do i'll just keep away from them, there's an ignore button after all. so after a few days using the platform i'm still very happy with it :)

Podmin support in diaspora\*

Podmins, did you know about the Podmin support section of our Discourse forum?

If you're having trouble with anything or have a question about running your pod, pop over there and get asking! Alternatively, you can visit our IRC channel for live support (#diaspora on irc.freenode.net). Note that IRC isn't staffed 24 hours a day, but there are people there who can help you most of the time.

Help others!

Community is everything in diaspora\* – so, if you're a podmin, particularly if you're more experienced, we'd love it if you'd look into Discourse and IRC when you're available so that you can help your fellow podmins.

Let's keep helping each other to make diaspora\* stronger and better!

Does this work in the same way as #Diaspora?

Anyway, it seems my posts are not crossing over to #Mastodon for some reason. Let's see if this one does.

Why I Won't Recommend #Diaspora to my #Family and #Friends

**I have been accused of being a #fake since I started here on Diaspora. **One person said I was a cop in real life who created this account to catch #pedophiles. Another thinks I'm the creation of a #pedophile in search of "real" #kids.

If I'm a cop, here to catch pedophiles, then blowing my cover only helps the pedophiles! And if I'm a pedo in search of kids, why do it on Diaspora where there aren't any other kids anyway?
