A Bold Peace

Over 60 years ago, Costa Rica became one of the only nations in the world to disband their military and to redirect national resources towards #education, health, and the #environment. Since then, Costa Rica has earned the number one spot in the Happy Planet Index, a ranking of countries based on measures of environmental protection and the happiness and health of its citizens. And the World Database of Happiness, with data on 149 nations compiled by a Dutch sociologist, lists Costa Rica as number one in self-reported happiness and nu... Show more...

Mossville: When Great Trees Fall

Mossville, Louisiana is a shadow of its former self – a community rich in natural resources and history, founded by formerly enslaved people, where neighbors lived in harmony, insulated from the horrors of Jim Crow. Today, however, Mossville no longer resembles the town it once was. Surrounded by 14 #petrochemical plants, Mossville is the future site of apartheid-born South African-based chemical company Sasol’s newest plant – a $21.2 billion project and the largest in the western hemisphere.

The community struggles to let go of their #... Show more...

The Great Green Wall

Executive Producer Fernando Meirelles (Academy Award-Nominated Director of City of God & The Constant Gardener) and Malian musician/activist Inna Modja take us on an epic journey along Africa’s Great Green Wall — an ambitious vision to grow an 8,000km 'wall’ of trees stretching across the entire width of the continent to restore land and provide a future for millions of people.

Traversing Senegal, Mali, Nigeria, Niger and Ethiopia, Modja follows the burgeoning Great Green Wall through Africa’s Sahel region — one of the most vulnerable places on earth (temperatures are rising 1.5 times faster than the global average) — laying bare the acute consequences of severe land degradation and accele... The Pollinators

Our complex food system rests on the wings of the honey bee and the commercial beekeepers that move them from farm to orchard pollinating the crops that produce the food we all eat.

The Pollinators is a cinematic journey around the United States following migratory beekeepers and their truckloads of honey bees as they pollinate the flowers that become the fruits, nuts and vegetables we all eat.

We will talk to farmers, scientist, chefs, economists and academics along the way to give a broad perspective about the threats to honey bees and what it means to our food security.

Zagros follows the creation of carpets across the Western mountains of Iran, the land of Bakhtiaris. Wool is the guiding thread that traverses nomadic and sedentary cultures, revealing the worlds of weavers, dyers and shepherds through their labour. Carpets weave the social fabric of their lives, giving it form as well as colour. The work is hard, and is gradually being devalued by the outside world – but their lives are redeemed through the love they feel for their traditions.

Like a crime-fighting superhero of the high seas, Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson has spent his life sailing the globe to keep our oceans and their inhabitants safe.

A daring ship’s captain with no fear of danger, Watson and his crews have confronted illegal whaling vessels from Europe to the Southern Ocean, seal hunters in Canada, and shark finners in Central America. Impervious to threats, with more than one nation issuing warrants for his arrest, Watson continues to intervene on behalf of his “clients”: the ocean creatures endangered by overfishing and illegal activities on the high seas.

As a teenager in the 1960s, Watson left an abusive home and shipped out as a deck hand on a merchant vessel. Upon his return he helped found Greenpeace, putting himself in harm’s way to protect marine mammals. But in 1977, when his bold interventions got him kicked off of Greenpeace’s board of directors, he launched Sea Shepherd with a ragtag c... Show more...

The Game Changers (2018) - IMDb

Watching this was an eye opener. Really makes you think about what you're eating and how it fuels the body.
I stopped eating meat except sardines about six months ago. Still eat yogurt and cheese, may have to wean myself off of those too. Although I'll probably never stop eating honey, I can stop eating the other stuff. And complex carbohydrates are a necessary nutrient, so more whole wheat pasta!

Bottom line is vegan foods are anti-inflammatory, and meat and diary are inflammatory, making recovery take longer.
I highly recommend this film, it may change your life!

In Netflix's ‘Dancing with the Birds,’ We See the Other Side of Bizarre Avian Spectacle
The new documentary showcases males' obsessive preparations and strange performances—and the gazes of female birds watching nearby.
...But Dancing with the Birds is more than a best-of compilation. The filmmakers introduce us to individual birds as the male dancers strive to present their best side to females watching nearby. We see not only their successes, but their failures, too, all affectionately narrated by the richly accented Fry. This approach lets us relate to the birds and their strange,... Show more...

An intimate and raw look at the transformational journey of two combat veterans suffering from severe trauma as they abandon pharmaceuticals to seek relief through the mind-expanding world of psychedelics. Mr #Kanamori #teaches a class of 10 year olds. We witness him interacting with his students across a school year. Wow, these kids are #amazing. And he is amazing. I found it profoundly moving. His favourite word is 'bonding'. That's what he's teaching here, and he's a master at his craft. I learned that there's more, so much more, to education than just facts and figures and books.

I believe the children of today hold the world of tomorrow in their hands. The answer to creating a more peaceful, more compassionate world, lies with them and them alone. And what a wonderful start to that journey these kids were given under Mr Kanamori's tutelage and guidance. I only wish all schools and all teachers were like this...

Fools & Dreamers: Regenerating a Native Forest

Fools & Dreamers is a 30-minute documentary telling the story of Hinewai Nature Reserve, on Canterbury’s Banks Peninsula, and its kaitiaki/manager of 30 years, botanist Hugh Wilson. We learn about the commitment of Hugh and the Maurice White Native Forest Trust to regenerate marginal, hilly farmland into native forest, using a minimal interference method that allows nature to do the work, giving life to over 1500 hectares of native forest, waterways, and the creatures that live within them.

When, in 1987, Hugh let the local community know about his plans to allow gorse to grow as a nurse canopy for self-sown native trees, the response was sceptical at best an... Show more...

Are you someone who used to play videogames, but stopped b/c you lost interest for some reason? I'd like to talk to you. For a thing. Plz RT
— David Wolinsky (@davidwolinsky) December 10, 2014

What is this?

Don't die started because I found the conversation around videogames online to be stifling. It's repetitive, dehumanizing, and typically fixated on consumer goods -- videogames as products, not the creative products of individuals.

So in January 2015 I set about talking to people who make videogames and people who used to play them, focusing on certain problems and misperceptions within the industry. Nine months and more than 100 interviews later, it is abundantly clear don't die is growing beyond the perspectives these two groups can provide. The questions are getting bigger.

Part of what keeps videogam... Show more...
