Mother Nature’s Child

Growing Outdoors in the Media Age

Mother Nature’s Child marks a moment in time when a living generation can still recall childhoods of free outdoor play. This will not be true for most children growing up today. Contemporary culture has undergone drastic change in the last three decades, forcing children indoors where they increasingly exhibit symptoms of “nature deficit”: obesity, depression, and a range of learning disorders. Mother Nature’s Child explores the various ways that time in nature promotes children’s well-being, contributes to the future of the planet, and nourishes the human spirit. The film investigates nature’s role in all aspects of child development – #... Show more...

Harvard professor Shoshana Zuboff wrote a monumental book about the new economic order that is alarming. "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism," reveals how the biggest tech companies deal with our data.

How do we regain control of our data? What is surveillance capitalism? In this documentary, Zuboff takes the lid off Google and Facebook and reveals a merciless form of capitalism in which no natural resources, but the citizen itself, serves as a raw material.

It is 2000, and the dot.com crisis has caused deep wounds. How will startup Google survive the bursting of the internet bubble? Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin don’t know anymore how to turn the tid... Show more...

How We Grow

How We Grow seeks to tell the story that digs deeper- beyond the farmers’ markets and local food access- into the ways in which communities rebuild themselves around agriculture. Inspired by the drive and dedication of the next generation of agricultural leaders in the Roaring Fork Valley, the community explores how to overcome pressing issues.

A documentary that will never let you see plastic the same way again

https://qz.com/1764780/the-story-of-plastic-changes-the-way-we-think-about-consumption/
The Story of Plastic, directed by Deia Schlosberg and produced by Stiv Wilson, is a relentless pile-on of images and factoids that build on each other, slowly forming the contours of the full scope of havoc wreaked by a single 60-year-old industry. It is the best and clearest guide through the plastic supply chain I’ve seen yet, which also means it’s the best tool to understand the full lifecycle of a material we touch and use every day.

Dammed to Extinction

For eons, a one-of-a-kind population of killer whales has hunted chinook salmon along the Pacific Coast of the United States. For the last 40 years, renowned whale scientist Ken Balcomb has closely observed them. He’s familiar with a deadly pattern, as salmon numbers plummet orcas starve.

The solution, says Balcomb, is getting rid of four fish-killing dams 500 miles away on the largest tributary to what once was the largest Chinook producing river on earth. Studying whales is science. Removing dams is politics. Defiantly mixing the two, says Balcomb, has become the most important work of his storied career. Meanwhile, the race to extinction for salmon and orcas speeds up, nipping... Show more...

Here Comes Hell (UK, 2019)

Here Comes Hell was one of the films that surprised me the most at this years Ramaskrik. I had no expectations before seeing it, but it quickly was clear I was in for a good time! A somewhat amateur production (a total budget of £22000), but shot in a beautiful black and white 4:3 format, this film mixes the feel of 1930's B-films with inspiration from Evil Dead, Braindead, Agatha Christie and early Hitchcock. It's over the top in every way, and a lot of fun while it lasts. Definitely one to watch!

The Barge People (UK, 2018)

I chose The Barge People as the starter for the second day at Ramaskrik 2019. A cosy, slow barge ride up the English canal system, until it's not so cosy anymore. This is a fairly traditional horror in the vein of many others. It's not trying to be a unique film, or break new ground, but aims for good entertainment. I was entertained, and thought it was a good start of the day.

Satanic Panic (USA, 2019)

This is a whimsical comedy about a pizza delivery girl who is being sent out to one of the far off suburbs to deliver an order. Naturally the residents of the delivery address are rather strange, and leaves her with no tip. Things quickly escalate when she refuses to take no for an answer.

To me this was a great end of the first day at Ramaskrik 2019. A fun, tounge in cheek, satanic scare film with well written dialogue, nice splashes of blood and entertaining characters. Some may find it too whimsical though. If horror comedies are not your thing, this one won't be either. I had fun, though.

CATS

Saw the movie " Cats " this afternoon.

Despite being panned by the critics, I enjoyed it! Thought the dancing, choreography, costumes, & set design to be creative, artistic & original. Couldn't understand the story line (what the heck is a "jellicle" cat anyway??). Ian McKellan was miscast, and the scenes with Jennifer Hudson were a little overly disconsolate (why so sad??); but then again for a musical - thought it well done!

What do critics know anyway. Image/photo

In a country where history casts a long shadow and authoritarianism reigns, a guerrilla festival team commandeer cinemas to champion liberty – if the KGB don’t get there first

It’s the opening night of a film festival in Belarus, the forest country on the fault line between Europe and Russia that was devastated in the 20th century. Such evenings usually involve red carpets and movie stars, but this one features a black veil covering a big screen, like a mirror at an Irish wake.

In front of the shrouded screen is an eight-metre pyramid, also covered in black plastic. Music starts. People crawl in slow motion from behind and below the movie screen. They’re dressed in 1940s clothes. Some look homeless, or like shtetl Jews. Minsk was almost 50% Jewish until the Nazis arrived. The slo-mo people uncover the pyramid to reveal a man on stilts, like a Louise Bourgeois spider, who terrorises them. When he finishes, a man walks on stage and says he’s a campaigner against capital punishment in Belarus.
