Gérard Araud compares regime to court of Louis XIV and warns UK over post-Brexit trade

The outgoing French ambassador to the US has compared the Trump administration to the court of King Louis XIV, filled with courtiers trying to interpret the caprices of a “whimsical, unpredictable, uninformed” leader.

Gérard Araud, who retires on Friday after a 37-year career that included some of the top jobs in French diplomacy, said Donald Trump’s unpredictability and his single-minded transactional interpretation of US interests was leaving the administration isolated on the world stage.

Lineup includes usual big-name auteurs including Herzog and the Dardennes brothers, but only four films by women in competition

The film world’s big beasts, including Terrence Malick, Ken Loach and Werner Herzog, have their new films premiering in May at the Cannes film festival, it has been announced – but Quentin Tarantino’s will be conspicuous by its absence after it was declared “not ready”.

A Hidden World, Malick’s long-gestating study of Austrian second world war conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter, will be the first time the elusive auteur will have his work at Cannes since winning the Palme d’Or for The Tree of Life in 2011. Loach’s Sorry We Missed You is the story of a delivery driver’s struggle to provide for his family, and takes aim at the gig economy. Werner Herzog will bring his new documentary Family Romance LLC.

PM says rebuilt cathedral should reflect ‘techniques and challenges of our times’

The French prime minister, Edouard Philippe, has announced an international architecture competition to rebuild the spire of Notre Dame Cathedral.

The 93-metre spire collapsed on Monday in a fire that began at its base and spread through the cathedral’s ribbed roof, made up of hundreds of oak beams, some dating back to the 13th century.

It's a building. #Christianity isn't a building. There is no Mecca for #Christians. Notre Dame is one of the hundreds of #churches vandalized in the name of Islam. Christians die, Christianity is dying and the godless celebrate only to be the next victim to the inhumanity they have tied themselves to.

Why the fuss over one building? Where is the fuss over the fall of #France to the Muslim invasion. The pope is a heretic and has already surrendered.

No more Crusades, the Siege of Vienna has been lost, not by war, but by betrayal from traitorous politicians who have beaten down the last European by calling him racist and white supremacist. If Crusaders do rise up, pray it's not too late.

It's only a building. Granted a nice building and it symbolizes history, but it's not even a symbol of Christianity. It's a symbol for #Catholics who put their faith in symbols and titles of men. Maybe this is the symbol that the French need to finally stand up. France says this is their 9/11, we have clearly forgotten our 9/11.
