I'm trying an in-jar grow of the P. adiposa I cloned. This is similar to the bottle technique that many large scale Asian farms use. A hole is bored through the center of the substrate which is then filled with grain spawn. Once fully colonized the lid is removed and it will fruit from the neck of the jar. In previous attempts to do this, I had a problem with the substrate expanding in the pressure cooker which caused the hole to close up before I could add the grain. This time around I inserted a perforated cardboard tube (from a roll of wrapping paper) which kept the hole open nicely, and the mycelium should have no problem digesting it.

I made a batch of liquid culture from that chestnut mushroom (P. adiposa) I cloned, but it's WAY more than I can use right now, so I decided to give it away on /r/MushroomGrowers. I made 10 syringes and asked $5 each to cover shipping. I got way more than 10 responses. This has me wondering the feasibility of selling cultures online. I currently have 7 varieties and it costs about $0.75 to make a syringe. 🤔

How Big Does Reishi Grow? The Story Of The Big Reishi

I put tissue samples of the three "forest medley" mushrooms on agar plates, but just in case those don't work for whatever reason I also chopped up the butts and rolled them up in wet cardboard "burritos" as a backup.

I was at the supermarket and I peeked at what they had for mushrooms out of curiosity. I found a small packaged "forest medley" that contained P. adiposa, lion's mane, and (what I think is) king oyster. I only have one of those in my culture library so I bought them to clone. I've been wanting to get my hands on some P. adiposa for a while now, so this is perfect.

Fantastic Fungi: A New Film Explores Earth’s Vast Network of Mycelium and Mushrooms
A new film considers how mycelium and mushrooms have created an often-unseen network, similar to an underground internet, that has connected all living beings for the last 3.5 billion years. Featuring conversations with food journalist Eugenia Bone, mycologist Paul Stamets, and writer Michael Pollan, Fantastic Fungi: The Magic Beneath Us dives into how the diverse underground web creates the soil necessary for plants and trees to root. “It’s amazing what we don’t know about mushrooms. They really are a frontier of knowledge,” Pollan says in the film...

I put my last two bag blocks in a super low-tech "shotgun" fruiting chamber (a plastic tote with 5" of moist perlite and a lot of 1/4" holes drilled in it), and I got the best yield thus far. I'm not sure if it was the fact that these blocks were a full 3 months old, or if it was the change of scenery, but they averaged 1 pound each. They have really nice size and color too. I may have to make few more of these totes.

I just harvested the 2-gallon bucket block. The mushrooms were much larger and meatier than I got from the bags, and I got about twice the yield from only 50% more substrate. I'm definitely doing it this way from now on.

I had a power supply go bad on my humidifier, and the RH dropped into the sixties for an extended period yesterday. My lion's mane turned a little yellow, but the shiitakes didn't seem to mind much.

Bucket o' Shiitake

This one's about 6 weeks old. The downside to using an opaque bucket vs a plastic bag is you can't see what's happening, so I decided to dump this one out and have a look. The good news is, it came out really easily. It's clearly quite well colonized, but the only place it's showing the browning which is indicative of maturity is where the holes in the bucket are (see the two dark spots). I'm not sure if better gas exchange is necessary for the browning to occur, or if I just need to wait longer.

A glimpse of the vast mycelium network underneath our feet, and of the film we are so proud to be in the final stages of completing… — Louie Schwartzberg
-> Fantastic Fungi sneak peek

As promised, here is a sneak clip from the amazing, exciting, inspiring film we have been working on, Fantastic Fungi. It was hard to choose just one, but we hope you agree this is worth getting excited about! Truthfully, the story is revealing itself to us in more wondrous ways imaginable. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support.

the echidna has dug out the walls of my puddle hahahaha why not i noticed there are still a number of Little lack Ants, the rulers of the ant world. Maybe they even rule echidnas. Nothing can beat Little Black Ants, they are determined! And excellent cleaners - if you have Little Black Ants, it's a good thing. Just dont get in their way.
Meanwhile, i came across a piccy of a little mushroom i'd found, from a few years back. i took it as a good omen at the time :)
If anyone knows what it is, it would be wonderful to put a name to it. April 2015, so the first autumn rains must have happened.

I just made up two 5lb spawn bags of maple sawdust with a dash of coffee grounds using proper gusseted, filter-patched polypropylene bags. Unfortunately I have a tiny pressure cooker, so tomorrow I'll have to sterilize them one at a time for about 2.5 hours each... but they should both be cooled down and ready by Sunday to be mixed with my 6 pint jars of colonized birdseed. I'll post pics tomorrow.

I made the call that this corn was far enough along to transfer to the other spawn bag I'd prepared, so now it gets to join its brother. I have 6 more pint jars of bird seed that are fully colonized and well on their way to mature, so this weekend I think I'll need to prepare a couple of larger bags. Maybe 2-3 gallon size.

Mycelia have fully colonized my spawn bag. I think I need to wait until the whole thing is as white and dense as it is on top before fruiting it. In the meantime, I have six more jars of bird seed getting furry.

There has been tremendous growth in the past two days. It's much faster than I'm used to seeing mycelia grow, especially this shiitake strain which took forever to colonize the corn. I guess they really do like wood (that's what she said).

I mixed my fully colonized corn into one of the spawn bags I'd prepared. Now it will sit in the windowsill where the air is a bit cooler, and (hopefully) the mycelia will spread throughout the substrate.

The bird seed jars I inoculated several days ago don't show any sign of growth, but it can sometimes take a while.

More info for @muppeth and other interested parties:

The spawn bag contains maple sawdust mixed with some used coffee grounds, which I then sealed up and sterilized in a pressure cooker. There is a hole in the bag covered with a Tyvek patch to allow it to breathe. However, I used high temp silicone to attach the Tyvek and it doesn't adhere well, so I ha... Show more...

The corn I inoculated with shiitake 5 weeks ago is really struggling to take hold. It should have fully colonized weeks ago. So, I prepped some bird seed to see if it will fare better.

My shiitake culture should be arriving in a couple of days, so I got a few growing bags made up and ready for pressure cooking. I mixed 1L of maple wood pellets with 1.5L of water and 500mL of used coffee grounds, then put it into two vacuum sealer bags with DIY Tyvek air filters. Adding water to the pellets is amazing. They immediately begin to swell and rise like dough, then crumble into sawdust at a touch. I'm not following any tried and true method here, I'm just going to see how it goes.

I ordered a syringe of snow cap shiitake liquid culture. I plan to dry/powder them to use as a seasoning and broth base. I'm still struggling to get my own portabella/crimini culture started, so this can keep me busy in the meantime.
