Ludotronics: On Exploration

Whether you’re working on a bachelor thesis, a scientific paper, a book, it’s always difficult to differentiate between what you know and what you think you know. To find out, you have to look literally everywhere for rabbit holes and, if you find one, follow it down. Do you really know what “emergence” and other important concepts mean, or do you just think you know while interesting details hide under the comforting disguise of common knowledge?

The same applies to working on a game treatment. Here, the gaps in your knowledge involve the potentials hidden behind the bland facades of default environments, standard gear, stereotyped characters, and any kind of common tropes.

Instead of rabbit holes, you can imagine going after concealed gaps in your knowledge as side quests or dungeon floors, whatever vets your appetite. Not the metaphor is... Show more...

itch.io Game Jams

So, itch.io has started up its own discussion with the G+ diaspora that's started boards everywhere. And I've used it before, but really only for computer games, though I've dipped my foot into the ttrpg waters there before. I never had the time for a programming game jam, but am thinking of signing up for one.

Anyone have any experience with them? I never realized that there were so many and that they were so frequent!

Book Release

Ludotronics: A Comprehensive Game Design Methodology From First Ideas to Spectacular Pitches and Proposals. 576p., 100+ Ill. March, 2019.

Free web version: Ludotronics.net
E-book version: DriveThruRPG

BUILDING BETTER WORLDS
  • Ludotronics is a conceptually complete paradigm and, building on that core, a comprehensive design methodology for intermediate and advanced game designers.
  • Ludotronics is about concept development, that path from coming up with a raw idea for a game to greenlighting a refined version of that idea for pre-production and later development.
  • Ludotronics is a methodology that will help you whip ideas into shape until they are strong and sturdy enough to qualify for a killer proposal and become the beating heart of your game design document.

I've rarely seen a game so stingy with achievements like Northgard by Shiro Games: only 10/81 after completing the story mode. Good. Achievements aren't meant to reward players for a playthrough they would have done anyway. See blog.mrpetovan.com/game-design-ti…

Video Game Review: Master of Orion (2016)

After a recent Steam sale, I bought a Master of Orion pack including the three original games released between 1993 and 2003, and the last one, released in 2016.

And as a wannabe game designer, I'm not impressed.

The Master of Orion reboot has all the classic flaws of recent 4X games

So it is happening.

#Microsoft is already killing #free #software. One of the two maintainers of #OpenMW, maybe the biggest #FOSS #game #engine rewrite, has left the project because of the #GitHub acquisition. I knew him, I worked with him, he put years of hard work and #love into the #project. He, along with the whole community, taught me maybe as much about #gamedesign and #opensource #collaboration as my whole #school studies. I genuinely loved the project. No one knows what's going to happen next, but I know I won't be able to help the project anywhere else than on the grounds of a free #platform.

It's ironic that #Bethesda just announced a new #TES sequel.
