Partisan Gerrymandering Upheld by Supreme Court

Conservative justices decide courts cannot protect democracy from gerrymandering
Supreme Court says federal courts don’t have a role in deciding partisan gerrymandering claims

Liberal justices were not happy about this:

And we shouldn't be happy about it either. Effectively, SCOTUS decided that no one need protect democracy in the US. This decision goes right along with the sentiment behind Citizens United: Democracy doesn't matter, and whoever holds the power should continue to hold the power, the will of the people be damned.
So politicians will continue to be free to choose their electorate, rather than the electorate choosing their representatives. Politicians in the US need not even to represent the people, a reality now acknowledged, embraced, enshrined, and immortalized by SCOTUS.

After Years of Republican Rule, the House Takes on Voting Rights

Supreme Court could legalise (and worsen) #gerrymandering

Although Kennedy’s replacement, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, did not decide any gerrymandering cases as a lower-court judge, his general disposition lines him up with the other conservatives on the Court who believe that the judiciary has no business policing gerrymandering. In the Maryland and North Carolina cases the Court just took, both lower courts were willing to act as the police. Because of a procedural quirk, a decision by the Supreme Court not to hear these cases would have counted as an acknowledgment that the lower courts got the question right. So there’s every reason to expect 5–4 reversals unless a conservative justice or two goes rogue, or gets cold feet.

Now, I imagine that abortion rights - which have been deterred in Ohio already - could be the least problem we are going to have with Brett Kavanaugh. Imagine that he could be the key player in legalising and worsening gerrym... Show more...

A Road Trip Across the American South With Politics in Mind

American "democracy" is at stake

The inflection point is not just President Drumpf and his administration’s conduct writ large, but the coming reckoning over whatever it is that Robert Mueller ends up finding after rooting around in felonious life and times of Donald J. Drumpf. “We are on the eve of the conclusion of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation and the House’s commencement of investigations of the president and his administration,” the letter reads. “The likely convergence of these two events will occur at a time when simmering regional conflicts and global power confrontations continue to threaten our security, economy and geopolitical stability.”

In my opinion, the corrupted American policies and state system should just crash and either lead to a freer society which is built without a state but on the basis of small, self-governing communes that cooperate with each other if they wish to, or a new state that will work smoothly, without people like Donnie to be able to take an office, and... Republicans for the (selected) American people

Rather than accept the will of the voters, who empowered the new governor to take the reins of the state government, Republicans entrenched their influence and undermined gubernatorial authority in an effort to avoid and undermine democratic accountability.
Instead of allowing power to shift without contest, Republicans in both states are now fighting rear-guard actions to strip authority from these offices, using “lame duck” sessions to launch what are effectively legislative coup d’états.
In Wisconsin, GOP lawmakers have advanced bills to sharply limit the power of the incoming governor, Tony Evers. The measures will restrict his ability to run public benefits programs and curb his authority to set rules on the implementation of state laws. They’ve also placed a legislative veto on any effort to ban guns from the state capitol and ended gubernatorial control over the Walker-created agency that uses taxpayer-funded loans and subsidies to attract out...
