People are switching from Facebook to WhatsApp (and other instant messengers) for news

With all the hot water Facebook has been in for the role of news on its platform, it looks like the social media giant is getting what it wanted.

A new study from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism found that the use of Facebook for news has declined. Instead, people are turning to messaging apps — most notably WhatsApp — to receive and share news.

The study's data come from surveys conducted by YouGov of representative sample populations in countries around the world.

Taking the place of news blasted out to entire social networks is one-to-one sharing or group messaging. News reading and sharing on WhatsApp in particular increased 4 percent from 2016 to 2018.

Of course Facebook also owns WhatsApp, but it is more about how news is received on any instant messenger app, than who actually owns it.

In order to expand our offering of free public privacy tools, we have started our own chat server with open registrations. The server uses XMPP ("Jabber") which is compatible with most popular instant messaging clients, and can be used to communicate with users of other XMPP servers, including Diaspora*.

We are announcing this here before listing ourselves on public registries in order to attract some early adopters so that we can work out any technical issues before advertising to a wider audience. Please check out our policies before signing up.

To connect, configure your IM client for chat.gibberfish.org on port 5222 using TLS encryption. Alternately, you can connect via Tor at 5kpdrdn4cxpby7mz.onion. If you have any problems, please PM us here, or send a message to blacksam@chat.gibberfish.org via XMPP.

The goal is to replace usage of WhatsApp or Telegram for official purposes.

It’s a unbelievably wonderful situation that we’re living in a world where governments genuinely care about openness, open source and open-standard based communications – and Matrix’s decentralisation and end-to-end encryption is a perfect fit for intra- and inter-governmental communication. Congratulations to France for going decentralised and supporting FOSS! We understand the whole project is going to be released entirely open source (other than the operational bits) – development is well under way and an early proof of concept is already circulating within various government entities.
