Australia calls on G20 to crackdown on social media in wake of New Zealand shooting

Ōe remembers his elementary school teacher claiming that Emperor Hirohito was a living god, and asking him every morning, "What would you do if the emperor commanded you to die?" Ōe always replied, "I would die, sir. I would cut open my belly and die." At home in bed at night he would acknowledge his reluctance to die and feel ashamed. After the war, he realized he had been taught lies and felt betrayed. This sense of betrayal later appeared in his writing.

Back with a #bang: #Japanese #fireworks from the #1800s – in #pictures
- #images #photos #foto #photo #photography #photograph #photographs #newsphotography #worldnews

The Japanese word for fireworks, hanabi, means “fire flowers”, which seems particularly fitting when you look at these illustrations from the late 1800s of Japanese fireworks bursting into life. Taken from catalogues published by the British company CR Brock and Co (now Brocks Fireworks), they advertised the wares of Hirayama Fireworks and Yokoi Fireworks and have recently been digitised and put online by the Yokohama city library. The founder of Hirayama, Jinta Hirayama, was among the first to incorporate brighter colours into Japanese pyrotechnics (previously they emitted only subdued oranges), boosting their beauty and appeal. In Japanese culture, fireworks are highly valued partly because they are so transient, like real flowers.

The #robot #waiters in this #Japanese #cafe are #controlled by #people with #paralysis

Whether it’s autonomous delivery bots dropping off pizza, robo-bartenders, or automated waiters, it’s clear that robots have a growing place in the food industry. But a new Japanese pop-up cafe located in Tokyo offers a far more uncommon — and potentially transformative — spin on this premise.

The three volumes above bring together a wonderful selection of wave and #ripple #designs produced by the #Japanese #artist Mori Yuzan, about whom not a lot is known, apart from that he hailed from Kyoto, worked in the Nihonga #style, and died in 1917. The works would have acted as a kind of go-to guide for Japanese craftsmen looking to adorn their wares with #wave and ripple #patterns. The designs would have found their way onto swords (both blades and handles) and associated paraphernalia (known as “sword furniture”), as well as lacquerware, Netsuke, religious objects, and a host of other items. ~

On the Ainu #language

#Japanese and #Korean have great similarities to each other in grammar and structure. Tungusic languages, including Manchu, also have many similarities to them. But, for #Ainu, I rather see grammatical similarities to Athabaskan languages that are used by indigenous people in the western part of North America.

I usually thought that the Ainu language belonged to the isolated languages, which emerged solely on their own, and never referred any attributes to any other language. Now, there seems to be a similarity to a Native language from North America. We're making progress, indeed, but still, this language needs to be preserved urgently.

On an irregular verb that may be confusing in learning Japanese

Arimasu is for showing the existence or location of inanimate objects. For example, if you wanted to say “Mt. Fuji is in Japan,” you’d say “Fujisan ha Nihon ni arimasu.” Imasu, on the other hand, is for the existence/location of people and animals. So for “I am in Japan,” it’d be Watashi ha Nihon ni imasu.” And finally, desu is used with adjectives that describe the condition of things or people. “Mt. Fuji is beautiful” is “Fujisan ha kirei desu,” and, if you’re confident enough to make the same boast about your own fetching good looks, it’d be Watashi ha kirei desu.”

Oh well, that's a problem I usually have with languages that differ between living and non-living objects, or beings, or whatever.
