we're twins!

Rockmelon (cantaloupe) germination - somewhat early but who am i to tell them when to make a start? i noticed these little fighters yesterday, while removing grass from around a peach tree (which may have been the scene of some last summer's snacking) There are more frosts due so this may be a somewhat short celebration of life, but they seem to think it's a good idea to live there. They're on a bit of a slope, so that probably helps. The peach tree doesn't - it's only just flowering but they are on the northern (sunny) side, so maybe the trunk of the tree acts as a bit of a frost barrier. There's also a lot of leaf-litter and bark-crumblings from a fallen bough, which would act as mulch i suppose. Anyway, go you little guys!

Some of the best roads are dirt!

One of my favourite spots along the Headwaters Trail, eventually leading to Norvan Falls. It's a road of loggers past. The ruts from the teams of horses dragging wagons full of logs are long gone. All that remains are the scars on the trees that were taken.

Huh. So Antarctica [does have an insect](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/09/science/antarctica-insects-midge-cold.html]. Cool.
There are between five million and six million insect species worldwide, and scientists have described about one million of them. Of these, only one, the Antarctic midge, is able to survive at the bottom of the planet. Purplish, wriggly and the size of a pinkie fingernail clipping, Antarctic midge larvae live for nearly two years underground, often near penguin and seal excrement. They spend over half of their lives, about eight months of the year, frozen.

Nicholas Teets, who leads the Insect Stress Biology Lab at the University of Kentucky, published an article last month in the Journal of Experimental Biology that reveals how Antarctic midge larvae are able to survive such extremes. By better understanding the processes at work, scientists hope that the Antarctic midges’ survival strategies — including dehydration and fre

A Greater Racket-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus paradiseus) spotted following a group of squirrels as they foraged for food. It's not after their food; they're after insects that may have been flushed out by the foraging squirrels.

Friendly Dragonfly

A couple of weeks ago, I was photographing some dragonflies on a local nature trail. I find these little creatures endlessly fascinating and I can't help but think they are studying me as much as I am studying them. I've always wanted to have one land on my arm or hand but until recently, I never had the luck. Well, the forest fairies must have sprinkled pixie dust on me because I finally got a little guy to land on my hand. He perched on my left hand and was facing to my left and of course I had my camera in my right hand, so I was twisting and contorting my arm and hand to get the camera lined up head on so I could get a shot. I had no idea how long he would stay, so I was a bit anxious to at least click off a couple of shots and hope they were in focus and centred. This photo is one of two I managed to get.

Now, a week later while attending Starfest, a huge dragonfly (helicopter siz... Show more...

#Amazon fires explained: what are they, why are they so damaging, and how can we stop them?

Source: https://theconversation.com/amazon-fires-explained-what-are-they-why-are-they-so-damaging-and-how-can-we-stop-them-122340
The charcoal record points towards infrequent fires in the Amazon even during periods of pre-Columbian human settlement, and the 8,000 or more Amazonian tree species have none of the evolutionary adaptations to fire found in their savanna or boreal cousins.

#MAUNAKEA

historians say the single-word version is actually short for Mauna a Wakea, the mountain's original name.
“Wakea,”sometimes translated as “Sky Father,” is considered the father of the Hawaiian people. In ancient times, the mountain’s summit was considered the realm of the gods.
It was kapu ― a forbidden place ― for all but the highest chiefs and priests.
For the most part, the crowded nature of Mauna Kea's summit is what's behind the conflict.
For much of the #indigenous population in Hawaii, sacredness is not just a concept ― it’s a feeling of connectedness with #... Show more...

The Fascinating Science of How Trees Communicate, Animated
https://www.brainpickings.org/2019/07/10/trees-ted-ed/
Yes, trees are the foundation of forests, but a forest is much more than what you see… Underground there is this other world — a world of infinite biological pathways that connect trees and allow them to communicate and allow the forest to behave as though it’s a single organism. It might remind you of a sort of intelligence.
