«Apply this country's virtues equally upon every nation in this world», by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D - MN)

I fled my home country of Somalia when I was 8 years old from a conflict that the United States later engaged in. I spent the next four years in a refugee camp in Kenya, where I experienced and witnessed unspeakable suffering from those who, like me, had lost everything because of war.

At a time when we spend more on our military than the next seven countries combined, our global armed presence is often the most immediate contact people in the developing world have with the United States. National security experts across the political spectrum agree that we don’t need nearly 800 military bases outside the United States to keep our country safe.

It must be hard for a true US-American to be citizen to a country that is more interested in either destroying or intervening in a country militarily, than taking care of its people's education. What kind of country is this? I don't know, and I guess that there is no Republican... Show more...

«Extensions require a clear plan», by Tony Blair

The soft Brexit supporters and those who want a fresh referendum should unite to insist Britain knows the direction of its future relationship with Europe before we leave. We have learned a lot during this Brexit debacle. It has been a masterclass in political risk. We are now in a state of confusion, in which even those whose day job is to study the details find it hard to explain.

We are told that this is the only deal on offer, when this is nonsense. Europe would be perfectly happy to amend the future declaration to point in the direction of hard or soft Brexit, should parliament decide it. Then, having decided the guiding principle, the detail would indeed be much easier.

For those of us who want to put the matter back to the people, the route to such a decision is through the process of forcing a conclusion to the hard v soft question. Once obliged to choose, MPs will realise either choice is unattractive and the people will understand neither is better than what we have ... Show more...

Op-ed by interim president to Venezuela Juan Guaidó

My ascension as interim president is based on Article 233 of the Venezuelan Constitution, according to which, if at the outset of a new term there is no elected head of state, power is vested in the president of the National Assembly until free and transparent elections take place. This is why the oath I took on Jan. 23 cannot be considered a “self-proclamation.” It was not of my own accord that I assumed the function of president that day, but in adherence to the Constitution.

A pattern has developed under the Maduro regime. When pressure builds, the first recourse is to repress and persecute. I know this because buckshot pellets fired by members of the armed forces — at peaceful protesters in 2017 — remain lodged in my own body. A minor price to pay compared to the sacrifices made by some of my compatriots.

On Mitt Romney's WashPost op-ed

In the article, Mr Romney praised many of Mr Drumpf's policies, such his tax reforms and appointment of conservative judges, ones he said "mainstream Republicans have promoted for years".
But he went on to say: "With the nation so divided, resentful and angry, presidential leadership in qualities of character is indispensable. And it is in this province where the incumbent's shortfall has been most glaring.

_A complicated one. During the 2016 campaign, Mr Romney said Mr Drumpf had neither "the temperament nor the judgement to be president" while Mr Drumpf called Mr Romney a "choke artist" and called his bid for the presidency in 2012 "the worst ever".__

Op-Ed by Elizabeth #Warren on her vision

And the United States can no longer maintain the comfortable assumption that its domestic and foreign policies are separate. Every decision the government makes should be grounded in the recognition that actions that undermine working families in this country ultimately erode American strength in the world. In other words, we need a foreign policy that works for all Americans.

She's got a point there. Donnie believes that he can do whatever he want, that it would be all right and wouldn't affect the exterior affairs, although the US are one of the mightiest nations in the whole world.

An op-ed by Fernando #Haddad, former presidential candidate at the Brazilian election, for the #PT

But should one not consider it from its own perspective and not just from that which today is hegemonic? Does not the process which is now taking place bring together with it possibilities which can enable the reorganization — right from scratch — of those which believe in the positive surpassing of the reigning order?

He's absolutely right at this point; due to the internet, people are able to organise themselves out from the scratch, to assemble at public places and start a protest due to anything. We can see it in countries like Brazil, France, Germany - everywhere! It has never been easier, and we need to take over these new opportunities to bring the change. Not only superficially, but radically.

Four star general blasts against #Trump

Last year, #McRaven, who did not make an endorsement in the 2016 presidential election, called Drumpf's lambasting of the news media possibly "the greatest threat to democracy in my lifetime" during a speech at the University of #Texas. A four-star admiral who retired from the Navy in 2014, McRaven also wrote an August op-ed article calling on Drumpf to revoke his security clearance after the president pulled former #CIA Director John #Brennan's clearance.

Theaitetos Inc. is taking the rare step of publishing an anonymous Op-Ed essay. We have done so at the request of the author, a senior official in the Israeli administration whose identity is known to us and whose job would be jeopardized by its disclosure. We believe publishing this essay anonymously is the only way to deliver an important perspective to our readers. We invite you to submit a question about the essay or our vetting process here.

Dystopian Israel and Orwellian Thought Crimes

I Israel unDemocratic? Apartheid-like? Orwellian? Dystopian?

#GeorgeOrwell #Dystopian #IsraeliOppression #1984 #OpEd @ArabNews Dystopian Israel turns Orwell’s ‘thoughtcrime’ into reality. Israel's oppression makes it a living, breathing example of the sinister Orwellian society envisioned in the novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four"

Here's my column on the subject. I think Orwellian fits Israel better today than any other critical description.

But you read my mind, right? :)
