So awhile back, I read a very sobering article in the New Yorker about #euthanasia in #Belgium, until I came upon this exchange between the author and the interview she was conducting with a doctor-- which struck me as hilarious in a Woody Allen-esque, sort-of-way:

Author: I mentioned that it appeared that a lot of people in Belgium were less afraid of death than I was.
Dr: Vermeersch looked at me as if he were recalculating my age downward.
“How can you be afraid of nothing?” he said. “Nothing can do you no harm.”
Author: “I’m afraid of not existing.”
Dr: Vermeersch: “Millions and billions of years you did not exist—what was the problem?”
Author: “But now I’ve formed relationships,” I said.

No, You’re Not Addicted to Social Media - Addiction is Individual whilst Social Norms apply to Groups - The Distinction Matters

It has become commonplace for media outlets to talk about this dark side of technology using the language of addiction. In a Washington Post op-ed earlier this year, for instance, psychologist Doreen Dodgen-Magee called on mental health professionals to recognize the bleak reality of “tech addiction.” In his New York Times column, Kevin Roose wrote about his “phone problem,” and how it had broken his brain. Parents and teens often signal their unhappiness with the amount of time spent online by framing the issue as smartphone addiction.

Framing the issue solely as social media addiction, besides being unhelpful, might in fact hinder social change. Measures that give teens and parents more control over the time they spend on social media — including Apple’s Screen Time and Android’s Digital Wellbeing — work well to increase awareness of our behavior, but they do nothing to change expecta... Let every syllable you utter be fraught with persuasion. What an event would it be for England and mankind if you could gain an acquittal! Is not such an event worth striving for? It is in man, I am sure it is, to effect that event. Gerrald, you are that man. Fertile in genius, strong in moral feeling, prepared with every accomplishment that literature and reflection can give. Musings on American culture

The ratio content/commercial on American television is pretty low compared to France’s or, I’m guessing, all of Europe’s. At first, I wondered how the American people could put up with such an imbalance, and then I realized that they simply don’t know better. American television is ubiquitous in the world, but the opposite isn’t true.

My next thought was the about American television executives who, surely, knew better, and still decided to go with the lowest content ratio possible, probably because they could get away with it.

Maybe this is the heart of the American culture: going for the maximum personal profit regardless of any morals or ethics as long as you can get away with it. Granted, it isn’t that new, original or radical an idea, but I found it interesting that it can somewhat be inferred from the overall abysmal quality of American television programming.

Shoes have a purpose: we wear them to walk. And walking is to be in movement, to be alive. There is always a Path to walk, and it is not always a physical one. Shoes are just a symbol to remind us that we need to get on the Path of living with the right tools. We need good shoes, we need to be prepared.
In life we need to choose wisely, which is not easy. We need to use our experience, to learn from our errors, to be able to use discernment, if not wisdom. This demands a certain amount of preparation, and I believe the best preparation one could achieve for his travel in life is to “know oneself”. It is the purpose of Philosophy to provide this knowledge, but still... one would need to choose wisely what kind of philosophy and find the one which suits him well.
Like in the Shoes shop, there are many shoes to choose from but maybe just one fits our feet. So... patience and perseverance. With... Show more...

Thinking about Thinking

I was thinking about thinking this morning, about the process of thinking - which seems appropriate somehow. How is it that vague notions become concrete concepts? First off, the process to me does not seem analytical. An analytical process is like when you factor an algebra equation, or, synthetically parse through a computer program piecing the functions together. That kind of thought seems to me to be a very minor part of what we do in our minds.

I do not know how novel an idea this may be, but I see most thought, creative thought, as a radically iterative process, much of it spinning just below the level of consciousness, with the more interesting or valued pieces popping up. A nascent notion is somewhat like a dream, or, if dormant, a half-forgotten memory. Then, for some reason, something sets a process spinning, to concretize the notion - not to construct an an analytical root-and-tree-branch structured entity, but rat... Show more...

US-American philosopher Henry David Thoreau on civil disobedience

At first, Thoreau agreed with Emerson’s teaching that social reform begins with the individual. In 1845, he built a hut at Walden Pond on property owned by Emerson. For the next few years, Thoreau lived simply off the land, meditated, and wrote about nature.

In July 1846, the sheriff arrested and jailed Thoreau for his tax delinquency. Someone, probably a relative, anonymously paid Thoreau’s taxes after he had spent one night in jail. This incident prompted Thoreau to write his famous essay, “Civil Disobedience” (originally published in 1849 as “Resistance to Civil Government”).

Thoreau declared that if the government required people to participate in injustice by obeying “unjust laws,” then people should “break the laws” even if they ended up in prison. “Under a government which imprisons any unjustly,” he asserted, “the true place for a just man is also a prison.”

Hans Baldung Grien’s early drawing from 1503 depicted a clothed Phyllis holding a riding crop and reigns sitting on Aristotle.

The Curious History of Phyllis on Aristotle

The story of Phyllis on Aristotle dates back to the 13th century in German and French versions, but is much better known from John Herold’s Latin version from the 14th century. [1]Herold was a Dominican who compiled a number of exempla that could be used in sermons. According to this version, Aristotle had warned his student, Alexander the Great, to avoid intimate affairs with his wife, Phyllis. Alexander should, instead, concentrate on philosophy. Phyllis was understandably upset that her husband was shunning her and particularly angry at Aristotle for encouraging him to do so. To exact revenge, Phyllis sta... Show more...

the nature of man(kind) - back to feudalism middle ages

a pretty big deal of time philosopher’s minds – and i am no exceptions – circle around the problem of: what is man? what is the natural nature of man?

is mankind really as fucked up as it seems?

or is it just what capitalism (the operating system of society in 99% of the world) made it?

almost always rewarding dark traits and thus brings about the worst in people?

you can always say: even a fucked up system is better than the stone age.

There is no “objective” reality

Even without this quantum experiment, the assumption of “locality”, that “the choices one observer makes do not influence the choices other observers make” does not hold true in the “real” world - the human social world. (Descartes was wrong to assume that he could be an isolated intellect).

we hold these truths to be self evident

Modern (NeoLiberal) Capitalists would say:

Top five regrets of the dying

1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

“This was the most common regret of all. When people realize that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people had not honoured even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made. Health brings a freedom very few realize, until they no longer have it.”

On death sentences and the ethics of executing murderers who have lost memory about their deeds

1. New York Post:

Billie Wayne Coble received lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Huntsville for the August 1989 shooting deaths of Robert and Zelda Vicha and their son, Bobby Vicha, at separate homes in Axtell, northeast of Waco.

In Coble’s clemency petition to the Board of Pardons and Paroles, Ellis said his client suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from his time as a Marine during the Vietnam War and was convicted, in part, due to misleading testimony from two prosecution expert witnesses on whether he would be a future danger.

“Every time I run into somebody that knew (his father and grandparents), it’s a good feeling. And when I hear stories about them, it still makes it feel like they’re kinda still here,” Vicha said.
