The destruction of the planet that we are doing has repercussions everywhere … which at the end of the day will affect us all, wherever we may be.

Gustavo Castro
Sole witness to the murder of Honduran environmentalist Berta Cáceres

Who is Gustavo Castro?
via Global Justice Ecology Project

Gustavo Castro Soto is beloved by movements throughout Latin America, and not just for his political organizing prowess and strategic brilliance. His together-we-can-do-this attitude, easy gap-toothed grin, and quick humor draw people into what otherwise could be overwhelming leadership.

Gustavo – like his dear friend Berta Cáceres– is a fomenter of the collective imagination that says that we can re-envision and build just and humane political, economic, and social systems, that w... show more

Fuel to the Fire

https://features.propublica.org/palm-oil/palm-oil-biofuels-ethanol-indonesia-peatland/

The tropical rainforests of Indonesia, and in particular the peatland regions of Borneo, have large amounts of carbon trapped within their trees and soil. Slashing and burning the existing forests to make way for oil-palm cultivation had a perverse effect: It released more carbon. A lot more carbon. NASA researchers say the accelerated destruction of Borneo’s forests contributed to the largest single-year global increase in carbon emissions in two millenniums, an explosion that transformed Indonesia into the world’s fourth-largest source of such emissions.

ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT FIREWORKS

It's that time again. Fireworks will once more fill the atmosphere with particulate matter and numerous heavy metals to be inhaled by humans and non-humans alike. These 'delightful' aerial displays rain down billions of plastic pieces to pollute our waterways and soil year after year. Let alone the noise pollution. Something to think about on this New Year's Eve. Please inform your family, friends and community of the toxic and environmental dangers of fireworks. Fireworks are deadly for numerous reasons. There are safer alternatives. Just say no to fireworks.
Thank you.

Prohibition of one-way plastic products takes effect in #EU countries

First Vice-President Frans #Timmermans, responsible for sustainable development said: "I warmly welcome today's ambitious agreement reached on our Commission proposal to reduce single use plastics. This agreement truly helps protect our people and our planet. Europeans are conscious that plastic waste is an enormous problem and the EU as a whole has shown true courage in addressing it, making us the global leader in tackling plastic marine litter. Equally important is, that with the solutions agreed upon today, we are also driving a new circular business model and showing the way forward to putting our economy on a more sustainable path."

Mr. Bernhardt’s proposal to change that plan, released just this month, would strip away protections from about nine million acres of the sage grouse habitat, a move that in a stroke opened up more land to oil and gas drilling than any other single policy action by the Drumpf administration.

Cement, steel, plastics, shipping, aviation and heavy road transport are responsible for a third of all carbon emissions

Six major elements of the world economy are responsible for a third of all carbon emissions.

They are cement, steel, plastics, shipping, aviation and heavy road transport. The accepted wisdom is that it is too expensive and difficult to make them reduce the emissions from their smokestacks and exhaust pipes.

But this view has been turned on its head by wide-ranging research by the Energy Transitions Commission, a group of planners, corporations and government advisers who decide where money should be invested to shape the future.

Based in London, the commission was founded by Shell and McKinsey, which courted a great deal of controversy. But what it says carries a great deal of weight and about 200 people contributed to its late-November report, Mission Possible: Reaching Net-zero Carbon Emissions from Harder-to-abate Sectors by Mid-century.

It charts how the six sectors could reduce their carbon emissions to zero... show more

Dirt Rich

Power Beneath Our Feet

Dirt Rich shifts focus from greenhouse gas emissions to carbon draw down which is the only viable solution for reversing the effects of runaway global warming in a timely manner. Through exploration of geo-therapy strategies, Dirt Rich shines light on their value and beauty which undeniably are our last hope for protecting life as we know it on this challenged planet. Through regenerative agricultural practices, reforestation of abandoned land, protection/restoration of carbon rich wetlands and keystone species, Dirt Rich illustrates how implementing these strategies will return our atmosphere to safe levels of carbon while growing soil, our most precious resource.

The science is clear. Global warming is worse than predicted and we are now at a tipping point. Currently our CO2 levels are at 400 parts per million (ppm) putting us way over the safe level of... show more

Irreparable Harm

The Tlingit people have called the vibrant coastline of Southeast Alaska home for over 10,000 years, and continue to practice a way of life intimately tied to the ocean and the largest remaining temperate rainforest on earth. Now contamination from industrial mining is threatening the safety of the wild food sources that make Alaska so unique. Xootsnoowú (Fortress of the Bears in Tlingit) is protected as Admiralty Island National Monument, and home to the Alaska Native village of Angoon. Greens Creek Mine, one of the largest silver producers in the world, is located thirty miles north of the village, and as the sole mine in the nation operating within a national monument, is required to comply with the law that no irreparable harm can befall the monument and its values.

Conservationists and Alaska Native communities have conducted independent research to assess whether Green’s Creek is contaminating the local ecosystem. Alar... show more
