How to open source your academic work in 7 steps

Academic work fits nicely into the open-source ethos: The higher the value of what you give away, the greater your academic prestige and earnings. Professors accomplish this by sharing their best ideas for free in journal articles in peer-reviewed literature. This is our currency, without a strong publishing record not only would our ability to progress in our careers degrade, but even our jobs could be lost (and the ability to get any other job).

This situation makes attribution or credit for developing new ideas and technologies critical to an academic, and it must be done in the peer-reviewed literature. Many young academics struggle with how to pull this off while working with an open-source community and keeping their academic publishing record strong. There does not need to be a conflict. In fact, by fully embracing open source, there are distinct advantages (e.g., it is hard to get scooped by unethical reviewers when you have a time- and date-stamped open-access preprint published for all the world to see).... Also found a new #platform for #publishing fiction. One main difference is that it's set in Japan. Also there is no cover art upload system (yet), so there is no real ... excuse to dismiss books because of their cover art.

I tried #royalroad, but as I was telling my friend @strypey, there is a #premium feature, and there is no benefit to paying for that, because all you really get is adblocking, which I already get through #ublockorigin.

But the #comments are from the same people.

Volunteer comments can be good, but I don't want my book becoming #washingtonpost. I don't even markup a comment #feature on my own website, because the actual case of publicity damage makes it not worth it.

Show more...

Hey everyone, I’m #newhere. I’m interested in #aircraft, #aviation, #poetry, #publishing, and #writing.

I tend to post photos about where I live, in Northern Michigan; my job, as an aircraft inspector; and my writing & poetry projects.

I had a decent following on G+, but since that is going away, I'm not going to invest any more time into that platform. Nice to meet you here.

French bookshops revolt after prize selects novel self-published on Amazon

French booksellers have called on literary judges to “defend books and not those who threaten them”, after one of France’s most prestigious prizes selected a self-published novel available only via Amazon.

Among the 17 titles in contention for this year’s Prix Renaudot is Marco Koskas’ Bande de Français, which was self-published on Amazon’s CreateSpace platform. According to the Syndicat de la librairie française, which represents French booksellers, the jury have put them in an impossible position.

The French-Israeli author, who has published more than a dozen books via more traditional routes, told the Guardian he was forced into put out an edition of Bande de Français himself after no French publisher picked it up.

The Syndicat warned that including Bande de Français on the Renaudot longlist “does a disservice to the author himself, as well as to booksellers, and is a worrying sign for the future of book c... Show more...

It would be nice to have a wider range of blogging alternatives too, perhaps alternatives to Tumblr, Blogger and Livejournal?

If you have any suggestions, let me know.

I think this is very interesting, but I wish the article said more about the economic factors, how publishing in high impact journals affects funding, and things like that. I wish it were easier for scientists to do the right thing
