Functional Programming in Python

I’m spending time trying to understand the differences between writing classes and functions in Python. Which one is better and why? From what I’m gathering, a lot of people are tired of writing classes in general. Classes are used in Object Oriented Programming (OOP) and some python coders hate it because it’s writing too many lines of code when only a few really matter. So programmers like functional programming (FP) in python instead.

To that end, I’ve been watching videos of both. OOP and FP videos on the Internet and started writing notes on them. Below is a great but also very deep video on functional progamming in python by Daniel Kirsch from PyData 2016. It’s a great video and his presentation is about 30 minutes with a great Q&A session.

Hacking math education with Python - Teacher, programmer, and author Peter Farrell explains why teaching math with Python works better than the traditional approach

While teaching a student who was baffled by his math lessons, Peter Farrell, a Python developer and mathematics teacher, decided to try using Python to teach the boy the math concepts he was having trouble learning.

Peter was inspired by the work of Seymour Papert, the father of the Logo programming language, which lives on in Python's Turtle module. The Turtle metaphor hooked Peter on Python and using it to teach math, much like I was drawn to Python.

Peter shares his approach in his new book, Math Adventures with Python: An Illustrated Guide to Exploring Math with Code.

"Students, especially high-schoolers, question the need to be doing all this calculating, graphing, and solving by hand in the 21st century, and I don't disagree with them. Learning to use Excel, for example, to crunch numbers should be seen as a basic necessity to work in an office. Learning to code, in any language, is... show more

Projecting Unicode to ASCII

Sometimes you need to downgrade Unicode text to more restricted ASCII
text. For example, while working on my previous
post
, I was
surprised that there didn’t appear to be an asteroid named
after Poincaré. There is one, but it was listed as Poincare in my list
of asteroid names.

Python module

I used the Python module
unidecode to convert names to
ASCII before searching, and that fixed the problem. Here’s a small
example showing how the code works.
import unidecode

for x in ["Poincaré", "Gödel"]:
print(x, unidecode.unidecode(x))

This produces
Poincaré Poincare
Gödel Godel

Installing the unidecode module also installs a command line utility
