Third migrant child dies in US custody

He was detained on April 19 by agents at the southern border, Guatemala’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. One day later, he was sent to a government-contracted youth shelter in Brownsville, Texas, to begin a process of family reunification, according to the ministry.

The following morning, employees noticed that the teen was sick with “fever, chills and a headache,” Stauffer said. They took him to a nearby hospital where he received treatment. He then returned to the shelter.

Describing the boy’s medical condition, the Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the boy had “a severe infection in the frontal lobe that showed no improvement, even after a surgical intervention to stabilize the pressure inside the head area.”

Fourht dead migrant in CBP custody

U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the death Tuesday, saying agents arrested the 40-year-old man early Sunday for re-entering the country illegally. His identity wasn't released.

He died at an El Paso hospital after receiving treatment for flu-like symptoms and liver and kidney failure. He's the fourth migrant to die in CBP custody since December, including an 8-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl.

In a statement, ACLU Border Rights Center Director Astrid Dominguez said "a transparent and independent investigation into the conditions at CBP detention facilities and its medical care practices is needed immediately."

[LIVE UPDATE] Trump signed veto against Congress' obstruction of national emergency declaration

Thank you @POTUS for standing up for America, supporting @DHSgov and declaring this humanitarian & security crisis exactly what it is – a national emergency. It was a pleasure to see our great partners in state & local law enforcement & the Angel parents in the Oval Office today!
~ Kirstjen Nielsen

According to CBP, the agency used fiscal year 2017 funds to construct "approximately 38 of 40 miles of wall in place of outdated designs in San Diego and El Centro, California, Santa Teresa, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas."

"The House and Senate resoundingly rejected the President’s lawless power grab, yet the President has chosen to continue to defy the Constitution, the Congress and the will of the American people," Pelosi said in a statement.

House votes unanimously for revelation of Mueller report by William Barr

House Republicans said the resolution was unnecessary and a waste of time, but they ultimately joined Democrats to approve it. Four Republicans — Reps. Justin Amash of Michigan, Matt Gaetz of Florida, Paul Gosar of Arizona, and Thomas Massie of Kentucky — voted “present.”

“A vote for this resolution will send a clear signal to both the American people and to the Department of Justice that Congress believes transparency is a fundamental principle necessary to ensure that government remains accountable to the public,” said House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), the lead sponsor of the effort.

Democrats have argued that the only acceptable redactions are grand jury material, classified information, and national security sources and methods. Republicans have largely deferred to Barr’s judgment, but they have publicly backed the idea that Mueller’s report should be released given the overwhelming public ... Show more...

US Senate voted to halt further military support to Saudi Arabia

"We have the opportunity to take a major step forward in ending the horrific war in Yemen and alleviating that terrible, terrible suffering being experienced by the people in one of the poorest countries in the world," Senator Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent, said.

Congress would need two-thirds majorities in both chambers to override a presidential veto and have the resolution take effect. So far, backers lack sufficient votes in both the House and Senate to do so.

Asked whether senators had been briefed on the White House's discussions in Riyadh, Kaine told Al Jazeera: "No we have not. Not about Khashoggi. Not about Yemen. Not about discussions about nuclear technology transfer. We have no information."

On the hearing of Wells Fargo before the House (feat. AOC, Maxine Waters et al.)

That’s not all. Over the past several years, Wells Fargo has been slapped with fines for abuses involving members of the military (including charging them higher interest rates, improperly repossessing their cars without a court order, and not disclosing their military status to courts while trying to evict them), numerous allegations of racism, and other consumer abuses.

“The past few years have taught us that our company does well by doing right. But doing right does not stop with simply repairing harm and rebuilding trust,” Sloan, who was last seen in the halls of Congress getting dragged to hell and back by Elizabeth Warren, said in prepared remarks.

Several Democrats, such as Rep. Carolyn Maloney and Ayanna Pressley, used their turns to sharply criticize Wells Fargo for its relationship with the NRA and the firearms industry. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, meanwhile, slammed the bank for having its grubby paws all over some of the wor... Show more...

WashPost fact-checkers call out AOC's comment on Trump's opioid crisis policy

In a tweet on March 8, the freshman Democratic lawmaker criticized Drumpf for wanting to divert money via a national emergency declaration to build a wall on the southern border but did not take the same action over opioid overdoses.

“Drumpf wanted almost $6 billion for his wall, which Congress refused. But Congress acted to give the administration more than $6 billion for the opioid crisis, so there was little need for him to transfer funds without congressional authorization,” the Washington Post concluded on Tuesday.

“One can question the effectiveness of the Drumpf response to the opioid epidemic without resorting to red herrings and false equivalency. Only in the most narrow technical way is her statement correct, so we cannot quite consider this a Four-Pinocchio claim. So Ocasio-Cortez earns three,” the Washington Post wrote.

Demented POTUS fires back at laughable right-winged populist pundit

“Wacky Nut Job @AnnCoulter, who still hasn’t figured out that, despite all odds and an entire Democrat Party of Far Left Radicals against me (not to mention certain Republicans who are sadly unwilling to fight), I am winning on the Border,” Drumpf wrote on Twitter.

Coulter's protestations, echoed by members of the House Freedom Caucus and other conservative lawmakers, were partly blamed in December for Drumpf’s decision not to sign a stopgap funding proposal that allocated far less than the $5.7 billion he had demanded for the wall — plunging the federal government into a 35-day partial shutdown.

“Ann Coulter, I don’t know her. I hardly know her. I haven’t spoken to her in way over a year. But the press loves saying ‘Ann Coulter.’ Probably if I did speak to her she’d be very nice. I just don’t have the time to speak to her,” Drumpf said.

Apprehensions at US-MEX border not going to exceed one million

Through the first five months of fiscal year 2019, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports there have been 268,044 apprehensions – a monthly average of 53,609, which would put the U.S. on track for 643,306 this fiscal year.

As for the 2019 calendar year, there have been 114,436 apprehensions in the first two months of this year. That’s an average of 57,218 per month, or 686,616 a year.

Way to go to exceed one million. Trump has a lot of work to do in diminishing safety and wealth in the states southwards, a lot of military interventions are required to accomplish this challenge.

When Nielsen said “this year,” she was referring to calendar year 2019, not the fiscal year, a department spokesperson told us. The secretary gets to “close to 1 million” based on “the rough estimate of 2,700 people encountered per day in February,” the spokesperson said.

Californian judge tells Trump administration to reunite more families

"But a government watchdog report revealed that the administration may have separated thousands of additional families under an earlier pilot program that was not disclosed.

Attorneys for the Justice Department had argued that the class action lawsuit should not be expanded because "they assert it would be too burdensome for them to identify the members of the newly proposed class," the judge wrote.

"The court made clear that potentially thousands of children's lives are at stake and that the Drumpf administration cannot simply ignore the devastation it has caused," said Lee Gelernt, the lead attorney in the ACLU's family separation lawsuit, in a statement.

DHS Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen defends Trump's separation policy

"This is not a manufactured crisis," Nielsen told the House Homeland Security Committee. "This is truly an emergency."

A misspelling: There's an emergency along the border, but not the emergency Trump made up, that caused this inhumane policy of spearating children from their parents, causing a lifelong trauma.

"No amount of verbal gymnastics will change that she knew the Drumpf administration was implementing a policy to separate families at the border," Democratic Rep. Bernie Thompson said.

"It should be very clear from these numbers that we are facing alarming trends in the rising volumes of people illegally crossing our southwest border or arriving at our ports of entry without documents," CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said Tuesday.

Senate is going to block Trump's national emergency, says McConnell

_"I think what is clear in the Senate is that there will be enough votes to pass the resolution of disapproval, which will then be vetoed by the president and then in all likelihood the veto will be upheld in the House," McConnell said while speaking to reporters in Kentucky.__

How is Trump going to respond to this movement of disapproval?

Rand Paul (R - KY) to veto on Trump's national emergency declaration

“I can’t vote to give the president the power to spend money that hasn’t been appropriated by Congress,” Paul (R-Ky.) said at an event in Kentucky on Saturday, according to the Bowling Green Daily News. “We may want more money for border security, but Congress didn’t authorize it. If we take away those checks and balances, it’s a dangerous thing.”

I almost wanted to say that this was typically libertarian, but this time, it sounds reasonable. This declaration would be an abuse of power to spend money he was not permitted to spend. It would be a betrayal before the US-American people. I never expected to side with Mr. Paul, though.

“I don't think that the president doing this is going to end Western order,” Kennedy said. “The sun will come up the next morning. I do think he is probably rethinking the situation.”

On Trump's constant campaign mode

Presidents traditionally ignore their potential opponents as long as possible to maintain their status as an incumbent floating above the contenders who are auditioning for a job they already inhabit.

No candidate has drawn more commentary and criticism from Trump than Sen. Warren, the liberal Massachusetts Democrat. Warren’s past claims of Native American heritage prompted Trump to brand her “Pocahontas” and he has shown no qualms about deploying racially charged barbs harking back to some of the nation’s darkest abuses.

But the president should always bring the discussion back to the numbers. Both the national interest and his political future depend on it.

The Census Bureau projects the immigrant share will surpass the highest level ever in America history in eight years if we choose to continue current policy.

The overall labor-force participation rate, the share who are working or looking for work, has not changed that much in recent years, especially for Drumpf voters — native-born people without a college degree.

On Trump's presidency after two years

Or would Drumpf, a rambunctious, ego-driven outsider who never follows the rules, change the office itself by establishing precedents that his successors would eventually use to justify their own flexing of presidential power?

Drumpf's verbal torching of the institutions of his own government like the Justice Department and the FBI appears to be becoming more intense as Robert Mueller's special counsel probe grinds on.

"I use many stats. I use many stats," Drumpf told a reporter who challenged him with official government data on drug trafficking last week. "Let me tell you, you have stats that are far worse than the ones that I use."

Admitting that his own were corrupt as well, although he presumes that the government's, thus his, data were wrong. His own administration spreaded lies, then, even those he doesn't want to influence or control anyhow.

16 states going to challenge Trump's naitonal emergency declaration

"We're suing President Drumpf to stop him from unilaterally robbing taxpayer funds lawfully set aside by Congress for the people of our states. For most of us, the office of the presidency is not a place for theatre," California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said.

The states - all of them but Maryland governed by Democrats - say the lawsuit aims to protect their residents, natural resources and economic interests. They argue that Mr Drumpf's order to divert funds would cost them millions of dollars.

Still, they will need some more states to effectively sue him. 16 out of 50 states are not many, only 32 percent.

Experts say the largest number of illegal migrants settling in the US each year is those who stay in the country after their visas expire. And most of drugs being trafficked into the US enter the country through ports of entry.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocks H Res. 109/"Green NewDeal"

McConnell fashions himself a brilliant political strategist when in fact — in Bob Dylan’s words — he is just the sluggish senator “blocking up the hall.”

There's a reason why they call him Bitch McCornhole. And it's of course a good reason, as you can imagine. I guess he lacks allies on both sides of the aisle.

Right now, the Green New Deal is an “ideal” — not a specific piece of legislation for anyone to pass serious judgement.

But if McConnell were truly interested in his state’s long-term future — not just his re-election bid in 2020 — he’d convey to his constituents that coal is getting its ass kicked by alternative energies and that coal seams are getting harder to mine. Embracing a cleaner economy is therefore an investment in the future — and the future generations of coal miners and their kids.

Can Trump single-handedly build the wall via national emergency?

National emergency declarations are designed to be unilateral and immediate. The primary restraint on a president invoking these powers was meant to be political, not legal.

A federal court will likely first analyze whether the president had the statutory authority to act, and whether he exceeded the limits of that authority.

I wait for the day when he will state that the courts were the enemy of the people as well, because they analyse the legal base of his emergency declaration, to subsequently declare on their behalf that he exceeded his own power.

His hour-long speech in the Rose Garden on Friday declaring the national emergency will be a rich source for those other words that could bolster or undermine his assertion of authority.

Trump won't end it at Congress disapproval

House Democrats have called Drumpf's declaration unlawful, and are considering a joint resolution disapproving of the declaration. Miller's comments during a Fox News interview made it clear the president is unlikely to back down.

Trump acting unreasonable over national emergency declaration

"I could do the wall over a longer period of time. I didn't need to do this," Drumpf told reporters gathered in the White House Rose Garden on Friday, shortly before he signed a proclamation declaring the emergency. "But I'd rather do it much faster."

"Because the president's words are so at odds with the ordinary meaning of 'emergency,' any brief challenging the emergency would be negligent not to quote him," said Peter M. Shane, a constitutional and administrative law professor at Ohio State University. "Whether a court would use those words to void the declaration is another matter."

"President Drumpf got one thing right this morning about his declaration when he said, 'I didn’t have to do this.' He’s right, he didn’t have to do this," Becerra said. "In fact, he can’t do this because the U.S. Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the power to direct dollars.”

Trumpists misinterpreting songs of freedom

This is by far the most deranged version of Woody Guthrie's «This Land Is Your Land», which is a song that tells us that the earth, any space in the outside world belongs to no-one particularly but is in everyone's equal possession; that there are no borders, no lines between us, while a wall is the exact opposite to this. I don't know whether the author did this on purpose or out of utter stupidity.

Also, how does he deframe the line:
As I went walkin', I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said: 'No tresspassing'
But on the other side it didn't say nothin'
That side was made for you and me.

This other side would be the Port of Entry, or the seaside along which you can't build a border without bankrupting the entire country. And what about the airbound travel? There are multiple ways, even the Canadian border. This is so stupid in many ways...

On Trump's declaration of national emergency

(Please mind that this is a starkly liberal comment, and it reads this way completely.)
The declaration of a phony national emergency represents the biggest false flag in recent American political history. Sure, Ann Coulter peeks through the curtains seven times a night to spot the oncoming brown horde, but no serious person believes this rises to anything near the level of an actual crisis.

Drumpf and Trumpism have changed America to a country defined not by laws, rules, norms, constitutional boundaries, and small-d democratic governance but by the winds, moods, and impulses of the Drumpf thugocracy.

The Trumpternet is full of romanticized black velvet-quality illustrations of a muscle-bound Drumpf riding on tanks and smiting the unbelievers. A 300-pound man with ample moobs panting on a golf cart doesn’t have the same je ne sais quoi. He needs this action to keep the dictator image alive.
