from a youtube comment on my log home:

My response:
translation: " #Shame on the trees you cut Yazikkkk very pity" (as near as I can tell).....
1. believe it or not, I'm using less trees than a similar sized home made from 2x4's.
2. these are fast-growing pines- they will replenish themselves in 20-30 years.
3. I used the entire tree- minus the bark. unlike standard #2x4's where much of the tree is discarded or turned into sawdust. My bark will make good mulch, so absolutely no waste. Also unlike a 2x4 built home- highly #processed wood, goes through a lot of machinery and #waste before being used in a #home.

With strikes looming in SA's banking sector due to job losses from 3IR... I wonder if politicians realise what punting 4IR will bring?

The South African banking sector (or a large unionised part of it) is due to protest/strike over job losses due to branches closing from progressions such as ATMs, online banking, and other automation largely from a 3IR (Third Industrial Revolution) era. I'm hearing politicians punting 4IR on a daily basis and in all their budget speeches but I'm really wondering if they've thought the impact through at all? Industry and business will evolve as competition (global and local) and market demand evolves regardless of how much 4IR is punted.

But the article linked to here is a good example of how we need to reskill and reshape a workforce in readiness for this. The reskilling does not happen in the short term otherwise a country could face mass unemployment. Change has always brought about newer and better opportunities. We've been through the inventions of cars, mobile phones, computers, the printing press, and much more and they have... Show more...

Information has always been a valuable commodity. As such, human beings have always tried to steal it. But while information theft is nothing new, modern technology has changed the game. Not only has the digital revolution made the collection and storage of mass quantities of data possible, but it’s also made these vast stores of information easier for hackers to plunder.

Are You Exercising Your Way To Stress?

You’re right, the headline is a very strange one! Exercise is vital to maintain good health and most of the time, the benefits of exercise far out-weigh the drawbacks. But if you suffer from a stressful or a depressive illness, exercise can actually make you feel worse. But how can this be?
I’m sure you’ve heard the following statement over and over again: exercise can help you to beat stress, or alleviate anxiety or boost a depressed mind. This is only true in part. Because many exercises can actually worsen these illnesses. And even if you perform exercises that can help, these exercises will only help temporarily.
The reason many people believe exercise to be helpful in combating stressful and depressive illnesses is because when you exercise vigorously for longer than 20 minutes, your body floods with endorphins. These chemicals give us a buzz, and this is why it is widely believed that exercise can cure s... Show more...

Ask HN: What skills to acquire in 2019?

I quit my software development job 4 months ago to take some time to travel, develop some ideas, and improve myself. I have a very flexible schedule, and I'm eager to make the most out of 2019.

What are some skills (technical or not) you think someone in my situation (or anyone else) should consider acquiring in 2019?

USB-Floppy Drive

Coole Idee... :-)

Image/photoY A wrote the following post Sun, 21 Oct 2018 08:26:47 +0200

USB extended by Charles ManginI extended the original cable from the business card USB drive, and routed it through a small piece of plastic, glued in place just inside the opening. This lets out just enough of the cable to plug into a hub or laptop, but prevents me pulling the wires all the way out.
Another weekend project. I decided that I would put a promotional USB drive I received at a tradeshow to good use. The drive itself was stuffed into something the size of a stack of business cards, and my thought was to try and cram those same innards into a floppy disk.

[UPDATE]i've just finished who wants to try this project themselves
