A fascinating story in photos on the annual remaking of the last Inca rope bridge still in use in Peru.

Every year the last remaining Inca rope bridge still in use is cast down and a new one erected across the Apurimac river in the Cusco region of Peru.

The Q'eswachaka bridge is woven by hand and has been in place for at least 600 years. Once part of the network that linked the most important cities and towns of the Inca empire, it was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2013.
The reconstruction of Q'eswachaka takes place once a year, and finishes with a celebration of food and music on the fourth day, which always coincides with the second Sunday of June.

Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro to meet with Donald Trump

“It’s the first time in a long time that a Brazilian president who is not anti-American, comes to Washington,” Bolsonaro said on Twitter after he arrived.

Outside the White House on Sunday afternoon, dozens of demonstrators gathered to protest the visit — holding signs including one that accused Bolsonaro of being a “murderer” over apparent links to suspects in the killing of rights activist Marielle Franco. Police have said those ties are coincidental.

The 63-year-old former paratrooper shares Drumpf’s hostility to the “dictator” Maduro, who took over after the death of socialist leader Hugo Chavez in 2013.

Maduro thanks military for staying loyal to him

Mr Maduro has retained the support of the military and close allies including Russia and China since Mr Guaidó declared himself interim president on 23 January.

Some protesters pushed against police in riot gear shouting "murderers" and officers responded by firing pepper spray at them.

President Maduro had used his demonstration to thank the military for their role in holding off what he described as an attempted coup as he continued to insist the blackout is part of a US plan for his downfall. Elsewhere, supporters of Mr Guaidó cited the power cut as just one of the reasons they want him gone, and soon.

On the internal tensions in Venezuela

The US envoy for Venezuela, Elliott Abrams, said it was hard to see a role for Mr Maduro in future democratic elections.
"If he wanted to build a democratic Venezuela, he had the opportunity to do so, but he did not," Mr Abrams said.

Speaking at an event marking the sixth anniversary of the death of his predecessor and political mentor, Hugo Chávez, Mr Maduro said: "While a crazed minority continues with their hatred, with their bitterness, it's their problem. We won't pay attention to them, compatriots."

All interventions are wrong

This should give us pause — at the very time that the U.S. is negotiating with the Taliban to withdraw from Afghanistan, perhaps ending 18 years of armed intervention and the forlorn hope of building a stable democracy. The equally destructive example of Iraq and its spillover into Syria is another warning that American intervention can stimulate the creation of new enemies.

We should understand that the traditions of “going into the mountains” hold a fascination and moral example in Latin America. Better armed and trained than ever the FARC was in Colombia, would we wish a 50-year civil war on our southern neighbor?

American intervention has a long history in Latin America; likewise, this has been a source of distrust and opposition throughout the Americas, one that Chavez & Maduro, Castro and others have nurtured and used to create political power. Perversely, the threat of American intervention strengthens Maduro’s core support, rather that weakens it.

Venezuela reigned by sick tyrant, says SoS Mike Pompeo

After Guaido named Saturday as the deadline for the aid to cross the border, Maduro vowed to stop the supplies from coming into the country. At a large rally in Caracas on Saturday, he dared the opposition to call for elections and called Guaido a "clown" and a "US puppet."

"We denounce Maduro's refusal to let humanitarian assistance reach #Venezuela. What kind of a sick tyrant stops food from getting to hungry people? The images of burning trucks filled with aid are sickening," Pompeo tweeted.

Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said on Twitter that the Maduro regime had "overplayed its hand" through its actions Saturday, making it easier for the international community to isolate it and harder for regime allies to continue supporting it.

On Bolsonaro's presidency until now (53 days)

The whole saga nicely encapsulates Bolsonaro’s young presidency: mistrust sewing internal division; a leak; the unmasking of the president’s ignorance; and then, eventually, a forced reversal.

In the middle of the campaign last year, Mourão said that modern Brazilian culture inherited “indolence” from Indigenous peoples and “trickery” from Africans. He spoke out against the “13th month salary,” a much-beloved, guaranteed additional payment that salaried employees receive at the end of the year — and a constitutional right.

Carvalho has called Mourão a “despicable charlatan.” (Carvalho, it should be noted, has questioned whether the Earth revolves around the Sun and claimed that Pepsi is sweetened with the cells of aborted fetuses, among other nonsensical musings.)

Jair Bolsonaro: Slayer of the indigenous people

“With Bolsonaro, the invaders are feeling more at ease,” Bitete Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau, who lives on an Indigenous reserve, told The Intercept by telephone.

Last month, the image of a bullet-riddled metal plaque reading “National Indigenous Foundation, Protected Territory” made the rounds on WhatsApp, Brazil’s most popular messaging app. The sign marks the entrance to one of several villages in the vast Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau Indigenous reserve, in a lawless region of the Amazonian state of Rondônia, near the Bolivian border.

Days after signing the decree, Bolsonaro tweeted a video clip of another one of his ministers who argued in a cable news interview that many of the existing Indigenous reserves were established using fraudulent documents, and called the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples “spurious” and “treasonous.”

Guaidó claims to have managed first delivery of humanitarian aid

“Today we delivered the first donation, or the first cargo of humanitarian aid, albeit on a small scale, because you know they have blocked the border for the time being,” Guaido, 35, said in televised remarks in Caracas on Monday evening.

Maduro has said this is part of a U.S.-orchestrated strategy to undermine and ultimately overthrow him. He says he will not allow this “show.”

There has been no sign of the aid that is being stockpiled in Cucuta leaving the warehouse.

#Merkel visits #Japan after both countries seal #JEFTA

Merkel, on a two-day visit to Japan, echoed many European nations in recognising Guaido as Venezuela’s interim leader and said he should organise new elections as soon as possible.

Abe has emphasized his cooperation with Merkel during a visit aimed a forging an “alliance of multilateralists” to resist U.S. President Donald Drumpf’s “America First” approach to trade and China’s pursuit of narrow national interests.

Op-ed by interim president to Venezuela Juan Guaidó

My ascension as interim president is based on Article 233 of the Venezuelan Constitution, according to which, if at the outset of a new term there is no elected head of state, power is vested in the president of the National Assembly until free and transparent elections take place. This is why the oath I took on Jan. 23 cannot be considered a “self-proclamation.” It was not of my own accord that I assumed the function of president that day, but in adherence to the Constitution.

A pattern has developed under the Maduro regime. When pressure builds, the first recourse is to repress and persecute. I know this because buckshot pellets fired by members of the armed forces — at peaceful protesters in 2017 — remain lodged in my own body. A minor price to pay compared to the sacrifices made by some of my compatriots.

Brazilian city threatened by lethal mudslide

Brazilian authorities said at least 110 people had been confirmed dead and at least 238 people remained missing, according to The Associated Press.

Vale said it was also "fully cooperating" with authorities and that three of its workers had been arrested with two others "responsible for the audit company who testified to the stability" of that dam.

"Dikes will be built in the Brumadinho mine area with the aim of containing sediments from the tailings. Moreover, the installation of a barrier for sediment retention near the water catchment of the city of Pará de Minas and the construction of a sediment containment barrier in the Paraopeba river will be concluded today," Vale said.

Self-proclaimed president of Venezuela Juan Guaidó calls fo peaceful protests amid political and economical crisis

In a live broadcast on Sunday, Guaido urged all Venezuelans to take the streets in "peaceful protest" at midday (16:30 GMT) on Wednesday to ask for humanitarian aid to be allowed in the country amid an economic and political crisis that has led millions to flee in recent years, according to the United Nations.

Addressing soldiers in an appearance on state TV, Maduro asked whether they were plotting with the "imperialist" United States, which he accused of openly leading a coup against him.

When you're wrong, everyone is a fiend to you and your people, because it's easier than to confess your failure and announce your resignation to recover stability. Megalomania should be an official mental illness.

#Brazil hit by landslide caused by broken dam

By Sunday night, firefighters in the state of Minas Gerais had confirmed 58 dead after a tailings dam broke, sending a torrent of sludge into the miner’s offices and the town of Brumadinho. Some 300 others are unaccounted for, and officials said the odds were slim that any would be found alive.

_The disaster at the Corrego do Feijao mine came less than four years after a dam collapsed at a nearby mine run by Samarco Mineracao SA, a joint venture by Vale and BHP Billiton (BHP.AX), killing 19 and filling a major river with toxic sludge.__

On Venezuela, Maduro, Guaidó, and the violent conflicts

#Maduro has disastrously mismanaged Venezuela’s potentially wealthy economy, overseeing severe shortages of food and medicine and hyperinflation. His authoritarian rule, enforced by violence, has exacerbated social divisions, undermined democratic institutions and free media, caused millions to flee abroad and alienated neighbouring countries.

Donald Drumpf’s gang of rightwing zealots, crooks and opportunists is not benign. Everywhere they intrude, they make matters worse. For them, altruism is an alien concept.

Potentially most damaging to Guaidó’s cause is his evident, prior collusion not only with rightwing regional governments such as Jair Bolsonaro’s Brazil, which instantly recognised him as president, but also with Drumpf’s White House, which did likewise. Allying with Drumpf at any time is a risky undertaking. To seek his endorsement, and appear to welco... Show more...

Riots surging in Venezuela after violent attempt by armed forces

A man who identified himself as Sgt. Wandres Figueroa led a small group of uniformed men to the special security unit headquarters at approximately 2:50 a.m. local (1:50 a.m. ET). The incursion was registered on cell phone and distributed via social media. In the videos, Figueroa speaks to the camera and calls on Venezuelans to take to the streets.

The events took place just days ahead of a national call for protests issued by the opposition-controlled National Assembly, which said it does not recognize Maduro's second term and called for the leader to step down in order to clear the way for new elections.

Funny to hear that they called the protesters members of the extreme right. I mean, every moderate leftist would currently try to putsch this failed politician Maduro is. I would even appreciate the US to eliminate this incapable douche. We need to get rid of him to rebuild Venezuela.

Venezuelan oppisitional leader Juan #Guaido released after brief detention

A video posted on social media appears to show the moment Guaido was pulled from a car on a highway by the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) on Sunday as he was travelling out of the capital, Caracas.

Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez told state television the detention was an “irregular procedure” by rogue agents who wanted to help the opposition create a “media show,” adding that the agents would face disciplinary action, Reuters reported.

“I assume the duty imposed by the Constitution and Article 333, which obliges all Venezuelans, vested with authority or not, to fight for the restitution of constitutional order,” the assembly quoted Guaido as saying in a series of posts on Twitter.
