Two articles on the #Kentucky teachers

  • Kentucky court nixes pension law that prompted teacher protests
Thursday, the state's highest court sided with Beshear. It ruled that lawmakers cannot take a bill close to final passage and replace it with an unrelated bill without voting on it three times over three separate days as the Constitution requires.

Why does it appear to me that it is usually the Republicans who misbehave in such a way that they seem to try to overcome legal conditions?

«Liberal arts» may be abandoned in favour of the market

But the backbone of the idea almost went away in 2015, when Governor Scott Walker released his administration’s budget proposal, which included a change to the university’s mission. The Wisconsin Idea would be tweaked. The “search for truth” would be cut in favor of a charge to “meet the state’s workforce needs.”
[...]
In mid-November, the university announced its plans to stop offering six liberal-arts majors, including geography, geology, French, German, two- and three-dimensional art, and history.

Do they really think that those who (would have) study/-ied these arts would now change (or have changed) to something that goes rather more into the high-tech section? To me, this seems to be rather a decision made about the funding of these arts, they wish to put more money into the sections that create those workforces. But seriously, the problem lies somewhere else: The educational funding is way too low, more than double of... show more

#Obamacare ruled as unconstitutional by #Texas court

The 2012 Supreme Court case was over whether such a penalty was legal -- but now that it is gone, O'Connor says the whole Affordable Care Act should be stricken down because the provision is "the keystone" of the program.
[...]
The ruling "exposes the monstrous endgame of Republicans' all-out assault on people with pre-existing conditions and Americans' access to affordable health care," Pelosi said in a statement.

Well... Democrats need to appeal to this court ruling, this may not happen. Aren't there any more liberal judges able to withdraw this court ruling? We need them, now.

A new system to prevent school shootings

Originally designed to help keep children safe online, Bark was monitoring children’s digital devices and sent alerts to parents when 17 people were massacred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14. Following the Parkland tragedy, the Bark team realized it needed to get the program into schools, and it needed to do so immediately.
[...]
Bark’s artificial intelligence monitors communication across students’ school-provided accounts, scanning for troubling issues such as cyberbullying, sexting and thoughts of suicide. Once a problem is detected, the pertinent snippet of the conversation is sent to the appropriate person, which could be an IT administrator, a school resource officer or even law enforcement, depending on the threat level.

This sounds helpful. I hope that this system will be able to prevent further school shootings, and even widen its range across the sea, so that we can soon use it in all other countries too. It might be a neat addit... show more

French author Michel #Houllebecq defends Donnie

“The Americans are getting off our backs. The Americans are letting us exist.”

This view is too much related to bare existing, as we can read it here. Of course the US now fell off their high horse and got back on the floor of reality, but to what price? The economy is going down in the US, tensions rise because of a constant rise of autocratic powers, thus the uncertainty about the future and the safety of the people rise and decrease respectively. How can this be any good? We have got great problems to solve, the least we could now need is an apalling clown. Sorry, Mr. Houllebecq, but with this slightly provocative but highly incapable statement, you have shown that you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.

- call to remember the oath, which was given to their soviet motherland.
This video is interesting, in my opinion, not by the content, but by the rank of the assembled officers. If to consider nepotism in such communities, this is more than just the opinion of disgruntled pensioners.
