have two kinds of #jobs
. The first is a job where they do nothing and no one knows they're there. These are odd jobs that are necessitated because some #institution
needs a person with some arbitrary qualification in order to get a #grant
of one sort or another. Or more commonly, jobs where literally no one who has #hiring
power knows they're there. The second is a job where they work many, many more hours than they are supposed to. They perform tasks that they should be being paid a lot more for. They are essentially doing their boss' job. The boss is making... who knows? Ten times more than they are? The common thread between both is that the institutions they work for are constantly shaving off parts of their job and giving them to interns, slave labor, prison labor, "independent" contractors, "gig economy" workers, automation, temps, or even volunteers. I don't think I know a single person who has ever gotten a raise. Not one, anywhere in any situation. Asking for a raise means the institution will start looking for someone more desperate to take your job (and "reclassify" your position). Everyone's medical insurance is getting much worse (co-pays rising, quality of care decreasing). The cost of almost everything is spiking. Food. Rent. Utilities. Transportation. Just... EVERYTHING. No one is spending #money
on anything (but their kids). Everyone is in #debt
. No one has any
options. Every year they are more and more trapped.
The forces that are driving this are inequality (power, violence), shrinking resources, population growth. Any steps to assuage one problem will make the other two worse. If we increase wages, people will buy more shit and have more kids. The only way to stem resource depletion is to put the brakes on the economy, which will lead to a MASSIVE increase in inequality. The #rich
will retreat to even more secluded enclaves, while the rest of the world becomes an open air #prison
. NO ONE will have jobs. Everyone will be forced into black markets. Massive waves of refugees. Wars. Drone attacks. Drones carrying nerve gas... Drones carrying targeted, short acting, highly infectious diseases. Poisoning water supplies, etc... War never works.
The more people you kill, the faster they have babies. The best you can do is put things off for a few generations (like World War Two).
We will start to see things like... Major powers supplying terrorist groups with airborne #viral
diseases that target population subsets, and covering their tracks. One day a mysterious disease starts killing millions of people in some place like... Indonesia or the Phillipines. Who knows? Argentina? The Middle East? Viruses have a latency period during which they are transmissible, infectious, but symptom-free. That sort of period can probably be engineered into a #virus
intentionally. A small fleet of boats with drones, moving from island to island, anchored in international waters. They fly the drones in low over the ocean in the dead of a moonless night. With satellite information, low-level flight paths to barns full of pigs, cows or chickens can be found. Fly the drone in, spray the pigs, fly it out, on to the next island. Two months later a strange new disease appears. Everyone shuts their ports, but it's too late. What a tragedy! So many dead! We regretfully send aid, and then after awhile, colonists.
This can probably be done tomorrow
. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Chinese have this capability and the Russians as well. It would almost be irresponsible to not
have this kind of capability. The USA could certainly do it. We may not have the drones sitting in storage, but we definitely have the naval infrastructure to make this sort of thing happen. A stealth submarine pops up in a river. Four drones go out... the new silent kind that no one knows about. The drones deposit their aerosol payload silently and are back in the submarine in eight minutes. The submarine slinks back out to sea undetected. Three months later, a strange, new disease emerges. WHAT A TRAGEDY! The FOX news anchors choke down the tears, but can't help but notice
that the regrettable, tragic deaths of 13.5 million people might
prove beneficial to certain sectors of the economy.
Of course, state actors would be crazy to do such a thing. But, the USA is currently involved in what? Fifteen undeclared wars worldwide? Who knows what we would be willing to do in twenty years when the effects of climate change are undeniable, even to Republicans?
But, it is possible we could get through this, but here's the rub. It would take maybe 500 people, working in a secret lab to put some kind of project like what I propose together. Right now, only nation-states have this kind of capability. But pretty soon, corporations will have it. And when technology improves to the point that 100 people could put such an operation together, suddenly the chances go way, way up. And what happens when it's 10. What happens when one dude, with a biomolecular printer he bought at Walmart, can start a world-ending plague from his Mom's basement because he can't get a date to the Prom?
